Today is the day of the Choosing. It's today that girls like me who just turned 16 get paraded in front of all the unmated boys 18 and up, in hopes of finding our mates. It has been a tradition for as long as I can remember. I'm nervous beyond belief though. Worry that my mate will reject me courses through me. I give myself one final look in the mirror before leaving; I'm wearing the customary dress that all candidates have to wear. It's a powder blue dress with short sleeves and a ruffle skirt. My make up is minimal, my eyes lined with blue and a touch of mascara.

"Raven" my mother calls "hurry up or we'll be late for the ceremony and you know how your father hates to be late!" "coming" I reply. I grab my shoes and hurry down the stairs to where my parents wait. My mother smiles when I appear and remarks " darling you look absolutely stunning." My father gives me the once over and nearly nods. He isn't outwardly emotional so the nod means a lot to me. We pile into the car and are off to the ceremony.
