OLIVIA STAN TO PLAY CHER IN OFF-BROADWAY MUSICAL ADAPTATION OF CLUELESS entertainment weekly
On Tuesday, The New Group announced casting news for the upcoming stage adaptation of the '90s cult classic Clueless. Olivia Stan, best known for her role in Disney Channel's Descendants musical series, will take on the role of Cher, made famous by Alicia Silverstone in the 1995 flick.
The stage show, which will premiere Off-Broadway in November as part of The New Group theater's 2018-2019 season, is written by the movie's original screenwriter and director Amy Heckerling and will be directed by Kristin Hanggi (Rock of Ages) with choreography by Kelly Devine (Come from Away). A limited engagement run of performances will begin Nov. 20 and continuing through Jan. 13.

Ephie Aardema will also star as Tai (played by the late Brittany Murphy in the movie) while Zurin Villanueva will bring Dion to the stage (the part was played by Stacey Dash onscreen). Dave Thomas Brown will take on Paul Rudd's role of kinda-brother-but-definitely-not-blood-brother and love interest Josh. Lori Alan, Sara Andreas, Gilbert L. Bailey II, Will Connolly, Danielle Marie Gonzalez, Tessa Grady, Talya Groves, Chris Hoch, L'ogan J'ones, Darius Jordan Lee, and Justin Mortelliti will also star in the show, which will feature '90s hit music reimagined to fit the storyline.

Olivia Stan's year just got even better. Deadline reports that she's landed the lead role of Cher Horowitz in the Off-Broadway production of Clueless the Musical, and we could not be more stoked about it.
Olivia may have hinted about the big news on her Instagram; she posted a photo of herself in her bedroom, writing, "Got a phone call & had to fly to LA and now i'm packing my whole life into boxes. see you next year LA, nyc i'm coming home."
That sneak peek into her wardrobe and room is totally a Cher mood, isn't it? We're pretty sure Olivia is going to kill it in the role and make Cher her own while staying true to the character we fell in love with in the iconic '90s movie.
Clueless the Musical is set to debut in November, running through mid-January 2019, and features a book by Clueless writer/director Amy Heckerling. According to Deadline, the music in the show will be "'re-imaginings' of '90s hits." We already know Olivia can sing with the best of them and that musicals are her forté; she played Amber in Hairspray Live! in 2016, and who can forget about her big star-making role as Mal in The Descendants? She's definitely got the chops for a big role like Cher; do you think she'll get to sing songs like "It's an Alaïa!" or "I'm Totally Buggin'?"
Clueless the Musical comes at a perfect time; there's a serious resurgence of '90s trends, and Urban Outfitters even sells an updated version of Cher's yellow plaid outfit.
The movie is a classic for sure, and some may be nervous to see how such a gem translates to the stage, but given the success of Mean Girls on Broadway, we've got a feeling Clueless the Musical is going to be a must-stop during your next NYC trip — especially with a pro like Olivia as the eternal icon, Cher.
