l.c.y.

The moment I open my eyes, I'm greeted once again with darkness.

The smell of pine trees fill the air, the moist soil beneath me crackling as I shift my body over the dead leaves scattered amongst the floor.

Where am I?

Sitting up and rubbing my eyes, my surroundings slowly start to come into view.

It's dark, but I can still make out the silhouette of trees towering towards the sky, a full moon barely peeking out from the clouds above me. There's just enough light to see a faint outline of my fingers if I hold them away from my face.

Panic blooms in my head as realization finally settles into my groggy thoughts that I'm not in bed

Panic blooms in my head as realization finally settles into my groggy thoughts that I'm not in bed. Immediately, my brain starts to paint an exquisite explanation.

Is it possible that I was kidnapped by someone?

Did I sleepwalk over here on my own?

Or . . .

It suddenly dawns on me.

Slowly raising a shaky hand, I brace myself as I hold my thumb and index finger above the skin on my arm.

I must be dreaming.

Yes. . . that's it. The moment I pinch myself, this'll all be over.

In one swift move, I pinch myself as hard as I can, squeezing my eyes shut to fill my thoughts with emptiness once more.

It works for a few seconds.

But the moment I open my eyes, my senses are flooded with the familiar scent of the forest.

Impossible.

I pinched myself as hard as possible, but I didn't feel a thing.

But everything feels so real.

A howl in the distance makes me lift my head in fear.

I must be in a dream. There was no reasonable explanation for this.

The forest suddenly seems much more terrifying.

Am I on some kind of painkiller?

Desperately, I begin to pinch myself again, harder than before. But I can't feel any pain, only the feeling of skin meeting skin as my right hand reaches to touch my left arm. There isn't even a trace of numbness as I move, as I can still feel my fingertips grazing lightly against it.

No

no

no

My surroundings start to spin.

But another unknown sound in the distance reminds me that it would not be the best idea to panic yet

A rustling of leaves sounds near the bushes, making me swivel my head quickly to my left. The sound of footprints echoes through the air.

This is all a nightmare.

As my thoughts get jumbled with confusion, the only solution I can muster up is trying again. Trying again to wake myself up.

I raise a wobbly hand up to my face, preparing to slap myself awake.

Just once.

Before I can lower my hand onto my cheek, I feel something grab my wrist.

Someone.

But before I can scream, a hand clamps over my mouth.

"Don't say a word," a voice warns softly.

I nod, tears threatening to spill out from the corners of my eyes before I blink them away.

I'm so sorry mom.

I'm sorry your daughter couldn't make it.
