steve harrington jumped through the portal first. it was just a hole in the dirt, but it led to the alternate dimension which will byers had been taken to about a year before.
once caroline jumped into the upside down, her vision went from dark nighttime with car headlights to dark blue with fumes and particles of the upside down surrounding her
she lifted her hand, showing max where the ground was and how far down the jump was. it was about 7 or 8 feet down from the hole in merrill's farm
"holy shit" steve whispered, looking around the dark blue tunnels
the group of kids had already began making progress in the tunnels, if by progress they meant arguing about which way to go through the tunnels
"uh. yeah, i'm pretty sure it's this way!" mike yelled, holding his flashlight to the map he'd drawn back at the byers home
"you're pretty sure, or you're certain?" dustin asked uneasily
"i'm 100% sure. just follow me and you'll know!" mike yelled, turning around to face his questioning friends
""whoa, whoa, whoa. hey, hey, hey, hey. i don't think so" steve said, shining his flashlight on the boy trying to take lead
"what?" mike asked, stopping in his tracks to look at his sisters ex boyfriend
"any of you little shits die down here, i'm getting the blame. got it, dipshit? from here on out, i'm leading the way. come on, let's go." steve said, walking in front of mike as the group started quickly following
"come on!" steve yelled, shining his flashlight down the tunnel
"hey, a little hustle!" steve yelled again, earning grunts from the rest of the group as they ran behind caroline's older brother

"god" lucas said as the group trailed through the upside down
"what is this place?" max asked, looking around with her flashlight
"guys, come on. keep moving" steve said, leading the kids to the hub
the group continued walking, but dustin stayed behind, looking to the roof of the tunnels
"what the hell" he said
"dustin, come on" caroline said, tugging his jacket
before he could look down and walk away, a flowerlike object on the roof of the tunnels began to breath back, it spit fumes directly towards dustin's mouth, causing him to scream in fear of what it did to him
"shit!" he yelled, jumping backwards
caroline grabbing him as he fell to the ground, coughing as he scrambled around the upside downs floor
"help! help! help!" dustin yelled, jumping off the floor, bumping into caroline
"dustin!" mike yelled, the group quickly returning to the two kids
"shit!" dustin yelled, slipping and falling to the floor
"dustin!" lucas and max yelled in unison helping their friend off the floor
