Blood Diamonds

Ladies and gentlemen who play the celebrity game,
On the red carpet, for a few minutes of fame,
So proudly displaying all their bling.
No doubt, this diamond is a beautiful thing,
They think of it as a fistful of dollars
But it is a fiery rope around their collars,
For so many lives have been lost
Digging out their precious rocks.
They parade them and compete
Like peacocks in a back street
Oblivious of the child who died,
Oblivious of the woman who cried
Of the man whipped to mine faster.
Of all the gangrenes that fester
There is naught worse than human greediness
Big fat corporations doing business
On the blood of poor people, for a dollar a day
Or even less, but what do their care
If they can grab another pair
Of precious stones, never minding who lost
Fingers to get them, they want them at all cost
But not theirs. Nothing wrong with jewellery
But the world should have mercy
For those underground who live in abject poverty,
While others go around adorned like a Christmas tree
Are human lives worthless compared to a pretty bauble?
When you think of it, the sparklers lose their sparkle.
