Chapter 11

Katara and I sat outside the village gates, waiting for Sokka and Aang's return. I sat with my legs crossed in a meditation pose as Katara sat curled up for warmth.

"I'm sure they'll be back." The old man from before said. I didn't bother looking at him. I continued searching the dark forest for a sign of their return.

"I know." Katara said in a small voice. We believed in Aang, but we were missing our brother. We've always looked out for each other, and to feel like we failed as sisters was just gut wrenching.

The old man wrapped blankets around our shoulders. "You should get some rest." He said. I knew he was trying to help, but I still was sour over before. I could have helped him. If only he had let me try...

Katara lifted her weary head up and stared out into the vast forest, clutching Sokka's boomerang in her hands. "Everything's going to be okay." She announced. I looked at her and nodded an affirmative.

"Your brother is in good hands." He tried to comfort us. "I would be shocked if the Avatar returned without him."

As the old man spoke a blue figure began emerging from the forest. "Aang?" I murmured, hoping it was him.

" Katara," Aang called out wearily.  "Katara I lost him."

Katara didn't seem to notice Aang, nor did the man who crouched next to her. They were oblivious to what stood right in front of their very eyes. The sun began to rise, signalling the beginning of the day and the end of the night we stayed awake through.

"The sun is rising. Perhaps he will return soon."

"But-" I was about to tell them what I could see, but Aang came closer to where we sat. I stayed quiet, waiting for Katara to finally see him.

"What?!" He questioned, quite frustrated. "No, I'm right here! Grrr!!!"

Aang began to wildly wave him hand in front of the old man, before he himself noticed the blue tone of his whole being. He held his hand up to the sun and said, "I'm in the spirit world!"

Katara wouldn't leave from her spot. The elderly man dejectedly left us alone. I wasn't sure what to do about me being able to see Aang while Katara couldn't, so I ignored him. He sat right behind us holding out to his bow staff.

Katara's hope seemed to diminish. I sat next to her and did my best to silently comfort her.

"I'll figure this out, guys, I promise." Aang spoke to us. It seemed more like he was trying to reassure himself more than us. "Like they said, I'm the bridge between the worlds, right? All I have to do is... figure out what I have to do. But once I do that, no problem!"

Katara still took no notice, she only looked up when Appa's smelly breathe blew on our faces. Aang tried to talk to Appa, but even he couldn't hear the Avatar.

"It's ok, Appa." Katara said as she pet his nose. "I'm sure they're on their way back. I bet they even found you a bunch of moon peaches for a treat." With each word her voice seemed happier Katara left with Appa in tow, leaving Aang and I alone.

"What am I supposed to do?" Aang asked, now to no one.

The moment she was far enough away I stood up and marched directly in front of Aang and stared down at the monk.

"Where is Sokka?" I asked, my voice dangerously low and my face just as fierce.

"Wha- Kayta?" Aang looked around then back at me. "You can see me? But how?"
