There's five ranks for typical familiars. A, B, C, D, and E. For uncommon or legendary ranks would be an S or SS ranked familiars, but these are extremely rare and seen as a myth. However, there's also the F ranked familiars. The weakest and by far most complicated to summon, surprisingly.

For F ranked, they require a magic source and a host. When both requirements are met the familiar will take shape. But the reason why this familiar is rare but terribly weak, it's because it's useless. It cannot gain more magic power, thus it cannot evolve. It cannot cast or help with spells, protect it's master, have a will of its own. Thus, these familiars, when summoned, are used as punching bags.

But not this time.

(Y/n) (L/n) held a strange fondness for these extremely weak but adorable familiars. He thought that even if he was more than able to summon a B rank, or even an A rank. It wouldn't suit him, for he didn't want a strong or rare familiar. He wanted one that was close to his heart, even if it was considered useless.

His friend, Damon, thought otherwise. Damon came from an esteem lineage of powerful mages, being the son of a noble family, he was rather excited to summon a powerful familiar to show off. Damon had always been in the spotlight, with good looks and a title to his name. He always got what he wanted. But when it came to (Y/n), he just could never reason with him. Ever since they were little, he just couldn't understand (y/n)'s passion to help out the weak.

To think that these two were ever friends would be a shock, (y/n) wasn't of any social status. His father was a bandit, with a sickly, bedridden mother who eventually passed within a few years of him being born. How these two met was as strange as their relationship was. They weren't rivals, but they also didn't see each other as equals. In a sense, they just stuck with each other, just because due to an odd circumstance that happened in the past. The two were very different and believed in almost the exact opposites. (y/n) was kind to all, living by the ideology that the "weak can become strong with affection." An ideology, in a world, where only the strongest are recognized as heroes. That wasn't to say (y/n) wasn't strong. In fact, he's beaten plenty of nobles and some high-ranking officials.

So with the power he possessed, Damon could not wrap his mind around how (y/n), one of the strongest mages he knew, wanted to summon an F rank familiar! Even those that were desperate would NEVER summon an F rank willingly. One, they were extremely complicated to summon, picking out the right materials was an impossible guessing game. Second, the magic source they needed had to be made into a "material", so it couldn't be pure mana, nor any infused crystals. This "material" had to be infused with some sort of power, that wasn't magic. The entire thing was just a big guessing game, that resulted in such a useless familiar, no one really bothered to summon. Those who did, on accident, ended up killing their familiars from endless years of torture.

Familiars could not be killed, directly by their masters. However, if their "spirit" is shattered, then they will perish. Countless records of F rank, even E rank familiars, were tortured until their spirit was shattered. For their "masters" couldn't bare being contracted to such pathetic beings. Evolving familiars was an incredibly hard task, the higher the rank, the easier it is (surprisingly). As mentioned before, F ranks couldn't evolve, at least, it's not known that they can.

But who would want to go through all that effort to evolve an F rank? There were so many other alternatives, if summoning was out of the question. Taming or adopting were other options. But none the less, when the time of their summoning exam came, (y/n) was still set on summoning an F rank.

Your pov

"(y/n) (l/n!" I heard my name being called, walking towards the summoning circle. I opened up a small black box. It was the last thing I remember my mother making me, it was so pretty I didn't bear to eat it. Placing it onto the floor, I thought about all the memories I had with my mother. They were always filled with love and warmth, that's all I wanted from my familiar. To be apart of me, which is why I'm contempt on having an F rank. For it bears my memories, my love and happiness, and that is what I'm happy with.

Thinking fondly of my memories, the Dango began to glow, growing in size, until each ball was about the palm of my hand. The stick had enlarged along with it, yet, for a moment, it seemed the transformation only stopped there. The balls began to move, eyes appearing, looking around at the world curiously. From records I've read about F ranks, they lack intelligence and a sense of free will. Yet before me, the three balls hopped off of their stick, that doesn't go through them? Huh, The three blobs, a pink-strawberry smelling one, a white-yellow- vanilla smelling one, and the green one smelled like matcha, looked around the class in wonder.

(Side note: Hanami Dango (Sakura colored) has very mild flavorings. The pink is from red Shisō and the green is from Japanese mugwort. Both are mild, so they taste almost exactly like the white plain, one.)

When they noticed me, they hopped over, snuggling into my leg. Aww, they're so cute! "(y/n), it's not too late to change your mind," the examiner stated. She had a concern look on her face, having scanned my familiars' ranks, her expression told me they were F ranks! Picking up the three blobs into my arms, I said that I was happy with my familiar-well, familiars... She gave me a hard look, before sighing. The blobs went back to their stick before slicing it into three? Attaching each piece to their backs, they hopped after me.

Walking passed Damon. He didn't look at me, groaning at my stubbornness. When he was called, the girls in our class screamed in admiration. Waving his hand over the summoning circle, he summoned an A Rank, Silver Viper. 'Boring!' I thought. Of course I would never tell him that, but I was happy with my familiars. Snuggling to the three of them, each having a sweet aroma, it was like heaven.

Damon's pov

Yes! An A rank, familiar! Petting his head, I glanced at (y/n), seeing him foolishly snuggling into his familiars. To think he successfully summoned not one, but three F ranks in one try was... stupidly amazing. He had kept that Dango for so long, I'm surprised it wasn't rotten when he pulled it out. But I do wonder how he managed to summon an F rank with such ease. Although, I don't really care all that much how, as to why he's not paying any attention to me! Whereas everyone else is showering me with compliments, he was playing with his familiars in the background. Tch, I never thought that I would ever envy an F rank, that was just out of the question. What was there to envy? It's not like those three are taking (y/n)'s attention from me or anything...

"Tsundere~" (y/n)'s voice echoed in my mind, Gah! I forgot he could use telepathy. Sending him a slight glare, he silly smiled at me, before continuing to pet his familiars.
