Being a companion of the Doctors meant he'd grow attached to you and become over protective. He knew how dangerous the universe was. He knew better than anyone. And many aliens could disguise themselves as humans.
Deep down he was afraid that if you both hit it off, you'd end up leaving. Like so many have. That how he felt with the others, and in the end they left, or forgot, and sometimes they would die. It was just another cruel joke from the universe.
So, when you were going on a date he couldn't help but feel the need to protect you. He-along with Clara- followed you. Though Clara did try to convince him you'd be fine. It was one date. Despite what she said he still followed. Or tried to at least.
All you did was turn one corner and you seemed to have disappeared.
