I sit on my bed in the dimmed large bedroom as the full moon's light shined brightly through the windows, the desk lamp casting a small light of its own. After my grandfather died about two months ago along with my twin sister the rest of my family and I moved to Union, Kentucky where my grandfather had lived, the house being so large that it even echoed slightly. My twin sister, Carly, and I were on our way to the hospital when we found out our grandfather was gravely ill, so when my sister accidentally ran a red light a truck had slammed into her car. I managed to escape with minor injuries, but my sister was killed instantly since the truck slammed into the driver's side. The next morning my grandfather had then died, so things for my family weren't going so well. In my grandfather's will he left his entire house to his daughter, who was my mother, so about two weeks after their deaths my parents, my younger brother Kenny and I moved to Union, Kentucky from New Jersey. Things have been really hard, and I truly hope they will get better. I haven't really made any friends here however since I dropped out of my freshman year of college to move here, though my younger brother Kenny had managed to make some friends since he's a sophomore in high school. He was even now friends with the boy named Connor who lived next-door to us, the two constantly hanging out even though they both went to separate schools.
"Ashley?" A knock was heard from my bedroom door as Kenny's voice could be heard calling my name, bringing me to turn my head and look over towards him.
"Hey." I say with a smile, watching as he entered the bedroom which was on the second story of the house.
"Connor and I are going to go play some basketball at the park down the street. Do you want to come?" Kenny asked. I look outside the window, a worried feeling crossing over me at the thought of my brother being out at this time of night. It was technically only 8pm as spring began to make itself known, but I still got nervous regardless. Both of our parents were on shift at the hospital since they were both doctors, so I had the final say of allowing my brother to go outside or not, but I didn't want to ruin his fun.
"You can go ahead." I said with a small smile as I turn back over towards him. "Just bring your cellphone and be back in an hour. You still have school tomorrow."
"I know I know." Kenny sighed, though he gave me a smile before leaving the room. I heard Connor's voice from downstairs in the living room asking if I was coming before the two males left, bringing me to sigh as I collapse on my bed. My head hit the pillows softly, my gaze looking up at the ceiling as I began to play with my silver lip ring which was on the left side of my bottom lip. Carly had her bottom lip pierced on the right, that way people could tell us apart when she had been alive.
After a few minutes of just lying there lost in thought I heard the sound of a car's door close next-door, curiosity getting the better of me as I stand to my feet and walk over towards the window which faced the side of my neighbor's house. Through the darkness I could make out a male with brown hair walking down the driveway and then going around to the front of the house, watching as he opened the door and stepped inside before I got a good look at him. Connor had told me he had an older brother who was on the road a lot, the only information him giving out was that his brother's name was Josh. What I didn't know however was the fact that Connor's last name was Hutcherson, and that his older brother was none other than Josh Hutcherson. I knew from online already that Josh had a brother named Connor but the information just didn't click, simply because my mind was still processing the fact that my twin sister, who was also my best friend, had died.
