A few months had gone by peacefully as it was June 21st, today being my 21st birthday. One year ago today Josh had kissed me for the first time at the lake he took me to that was near our houses, though technically we weren't a couple until June 22nd when I stopped him from getting on that plane which would had taken him to LA. We've been through so much this last year, but we continued to fight the odds and stay together since we loved each other.
After Josh got out of the hospital we stayed in Kentucky with our families so that we could both have a smooth recovery, spending time with our families being the thing Josh and I really needed. During Josh's recovery he dyed his hair back to his natural color, the transition from going blonde to brunette seeming a bit weird for a few days.
It was early morning in Hawaii as I opened my eyes from the smell of bacon being cooked in the kitchen, Josh and I returning to our beach house and staying there. Both of our families would be flying to Hawaii today for my birthday, which I was really excited about. Josh never proposed to me either and I had no idea he had planned to, the brunette wanting to wait until the perfect moment since the first time when he planned on making the commitment it was spoiled because of the killer.
I sat up on the bed and rubbed my tired eyes for a few moments before standing to my feet and walking out of the bedroom, my blue tank top and matching shorts clinging to my body. The bottom of my bare feet were cold against the hardwood floor as I made my way into the kitchen, seeing Josh shirtless with only wearing green basketball shorts cooking over the stove.
"You're not supposed to be up yet." Josh chuckled when hearing me walk in. "I was going to surprise you with breakfast in bed."
"I smelled the bacon." I smiled, pushing myself up against the counter to sit on top of it.
"Happy birthday." Josh walked over and kissed me softly, to which I playfully punched him on the arm. "What was that for?" Josh laughed.
"A year ago today you kissed me for the first time and then were against it." I playfully laughed.
"I'm glad you stopped me from going on that plan." Josh smiled.
"Me too." I leaned over and kissed Josh before jumping down and walking over towards the stove, seeing that scrambled eggs and bacon were cooking. "I'm starving." My stomach then growled, bringing Josh to chuckle.
"Breakfast is almost finished. Why don't you go wait on the porch? I'll bring your breakfast to you so we can look out onto the ocean." Josh suggested as I nodded, walking out of the kitchen. As soon as I opened the backdoor and stepped out onto the porch I gasped, the sight I saw in front of me causing my eyes to widen in complete shock.
On the porch littered with red rose pedals while pink rose pedals were placed together in a shape of a large arrow pointing to the steps which led to the beach, a path of mixed red and pink rose pedals leading down towards the water. I turned back around to look through the glass doors and saw Josh looking at me, a smile on his face as he pointed for me to follow the rose path. Confusion washed over my features as I turned back around, walking down the porch's steps and followed the path. It was only dawn so the sand wasn't as hot as it normally was. I reached the edge of the water where a large heart made from nothing but red rose pedals could be seen, my attention shifting behind me and saw Josh running towards the water.
"What's going on?" I asked in confusion, though laughter was clear in my tone. Josh smiled and took my hand, leading me in the center of the heart where he stared at me for a few moments.
"During this last year we've been through so much together, those challenges making us stronger as a couple." Josh began, his voice slightly shaking with nerves. "I never thought that I would fall in love with someone at this age, but then I met you. I made you fall down on your skateboard which probably wasn't the best impression, but things went pretty smoothly from there."
Josh laughed as I smiled.
"You're my everything, Ashley. You're the only person who I think about when I wake up in the morning, and the only person I think of before falling asleep every single night. Every time I look at you it's like I fall in love more and more. When a new day begins... I'm falling in love with you over and over again."
Josh reached into his pocket and pulled out a small tan colored ring box, the young man getting down on one knee as my eyes widened in shock.
"You're the only person I want to be with. Will you make me the luckiest man in the whole world and marry me?" Josh opened the box which revealed a beautiful diamond ring inside, a large diamond in the center while small diamonds circled around the white gold band.
"Of course." I nodded with tears of joy in my eyes. "Of course I will." A smile appeared on both of our faces as Josh sighed in relief, taking my left hand and slipping off the promise ring. He slid the promise ring onto my ring finger on my right hand before taking the engagement ring and putting it on my ring finger on my left hand, the diamonds glistening brightly from the sun. Josh then quickly stood up and wrapped his arms around me, lifting me up and spinning me around while kissing me.
"I was so scared you would say no." Josh chuckled as he cradled me into his arms and walked back up to the house, to which I wrapped my arms around the back of his neck.
"You really thought I was going to say no?" I laughed.
"There was that fear." Josh admitted. "You're the only person I want to spend the rest of my life with." I smiled, resting my head on his shoulder as we made it back to the house.
After both of us called our parents and close friends, which I had heard Jen squealing from the end of Josh's phone, the two of us ate our breakfast in bed. I was engaged to Josh, which was the perfect birthday present anyone could give me. As I ate a piece of bacon however I suddenly felt sick, to which I jumped up from the bed after putting the plate of food carefully on the end table and raced to the bathroom, bringing Josh to run after me.
"Ashley?" Josh called from the closed bathroom door, bringing me to lock it. He could hear me throwing up which prompt him to try and turn the doorknob, sighing that it was locked. "Please let me in."
"It's too gross to see." I responded from the other side of the door. "I'm okay. Just go back to eating breakfast. I'll be there in a few minutes."
"Are you sure?" Josh asked.
"Yeah." I nodded. "I just need to brush my teeth and clean myself up a bit."
"Okay." Josh sighed again and walked back into our bedroom, bringing me to sigh as well as the feeling of being sick slowly died down to nothing. I opened the cabinet underneath the sink and pulled out a pregnancy test, my heart pounding as I tore open the box.
A few minutes later I came running out of the bathroom after I took the test and waited for the results, my eyes beaming in pure excitement while hurrying to the bedroom with the test in my hand.
"I'm pregnant!" I said as I stopped at the foot of the room, waving the test around as Josh's jaw dropped.
"Are you serious?" Josh quickly stood from the bed and crossed the room. "You're pregnant?" I nodded, the largest smile crossing Josh's face as he looked at the pregnancy test. Tears clouded his eyes as he pulled me into a tight embrace, the morning of my birthday revealing so many wonderful things.
