I sat by Josh's hospital bed in a chair while holding his hand, Josh continuing to be unconscious after three days. He had to have emergency surgery because of his stab wound, the surgery being successful with no complications. The doctors said that it would take some time for Josh to awaken from the anesthesia however since he is sensitive to it; a small part of my mind was terrified that he wouldn't wake up from it. As I was lightly rubbing the top of his hand with my thumb his eyes slowly opened, a small groan escaping his throat as I smiled down at him.
"Hey, sleepy head. You're finally awake." I leaned over and brushed my lips softly against his for a few moments. "How do you feel?"
"Like crap." Josh sighed, though smiled up at me. "Thank God you're okay."
"I am, thanks to you." I responded. The stab wounds on my leg and shoulder blade were already stitched up which allowed me to be discharged, though I only changed into a pair of my own clothes and stayed at the hospital the entire time with Josh.
"He's... he's dead, right?" Josh asked. "I killed him?"
"You did." I nodded. "The nightmare is finally over." I had no idea how wrong I was however. The nightmare was only beginning; the mastermind of the killer was someone who I knew far too well and deeply cared for. A soft knock was then heard from the other side of the hospital's closed door, Officer Scott Johnson walking into the room with his police uniform on.
"Ah, you're awake." Scott said to Josh as the officer froze in place, a small smile forming. "How are you feeling?"
"I'll give you the same answer I gave to Ashley," Josh chuckled. "I feel like crap."
"You'll be better soon." Scott said while walking further into the room with a clear bag in his hands, Josh's suit and shoes being inside the bag. "I have your belongings, Josh."
"Thank you." Josh reached over and took the bag, feeling around to the pocket of his dress pants while I sat back down in my seat. Josh felt the small ring box still inside the pocket, to which Josh lightly sighed as he looked over towards me.
"I didn't expect you to be here." I said while my attention shifted to Scott. "I figured you would be in Kentucky."
"When I heard what happened I came here right away." Scott responded. "I needed to see for myself that David Hans was dead."
"What's going to happen now?" Josh whispered in fear as he slowly looked up at Scott. "I killed him in self-defense, so I won't get into any trouble, right?"
"No chargers are being brought against you." Scott reassured Josh. "You were the one to finally stop a serial killer. You're a hero to the police department." Josh gave a small smile, to which I sighed in relief. "So what are you guys going to do now?"
"I'm not sure." I admitted. "I'm guessing go back home until Josh is better."
"Then we can go to the beach house in Hawaii until I start filming Mockingjay part two." Josh added. "If you still want to do that, though."
"Of course I do." I chuckled. The door opened again as our parents and brothers came walking into the room, Josh being assaulted by endless hugs as I laughed.
"I'll get out of your hair then." Scott said as he turned to walk away.
"Wait." I said, quickly standing up and limping slightly over to him. "Thank you. For everything."
"You're welcome. Take care, Ashley." Scott then left, my attention shifting back towards Josh with a smile on my face.
