A short while later, there was a tap at the door. I sat up quickly. "Come in," I called, already preparing my apology to Lina.
Instead, Jaxon entered the room. He gave me a weak smile. "Mind if I come in?"
Confused, I nodded. He took another few steps inside and rested on the vanity across from the bed.
"What's up?" I asked after a moment of off-putting silence.
Jaxon shrugged. "The girls are, like, bonding, or whatever, so I figured I'd come hang with you." The idea of the girls bonding made me unreasonably nervous. What if they were talking about how much they hated me? How annoying I could be?
I suppress the urge to rush out there, though. Jaxon was clearly here looking from some company after Andi kicked his friends out for us. The least I could do was talk to him. Andi would like that, I hope.
"Alright, cool," I said after realizing Jaxon was waiting for me to respond.
There was another silence. Jaxon broke it this time. "Hey, sorry for Andi earlier, too. She told me she sort of told you off. She doesn't really know when it's a good time not to say something," he explained like he dealt with it all the time but still loved it about her.
"She was fine," I told him honestly. "I deserved it. Clearly she's had it rough."
"I wish she didn't though," he told me. He stared at his shoes and sighed. "I guess we all have parent issues. But I just want to protect her, ya know?"
Some part of me did understand him. I felt like that with Lina, when her dad left. Helpless, but like I had to do something. Instead of getting into more feelings, I tried a different approach. "How did you guys meet?" I asked, trying to provoke something out of Jaxon other than his usual cool guy deamor. Despite my earlier thoughts, there was clearly more to Jaxon than first appeared.
He stared out the window, as if remembering that day.
"We were at my dad's restaurant. He owns a bar in the middle of the ring. Decent place, but it attracted a lot of creeps. I wasn't the biggest fan.
Andi had been there for a while, all by herself at a table. She was one of those faces you didn't forget. I couldn't help but stare at her when I was working the bar.
'Jaxon,' my dad hissed, pulling me out of my daze. 'I got another report that you kicked someone out. What's up?'
I rolled my eyes at my old man. 'It's not kicking them out if they never get in,' I corrected him. He didn't like that much.
'Son, this is my place! You aren't allowed a say in who comes in!' he barked.
I felt myself heat up with anger. 'I'm just trying to keep this place decent!' I retorted. 'If it were up to you, we would have prostitutes at every table!'
'I'm trying to make a living! Enough to take care of you! I can't do that if you continue to ruin my business!'
With a harsh sigh, I tossed off my apron. 'I've got a solution,' I said sarcastically. 'I'll just leave. Then you'll have nothing to worry about. Let whoever you want in. You won't have a kid to raise anymore!'
It might've been stupid, but in the moment I didn't care. I didn't need my dad controlling my life anymore than he already was trying to. So I left, with half the bar staring after me.
Before I could even get all the way out, I didn't much of any place to go anyway, someone stopped me.
'Hey,' they said. A girl's voice.
Surprised, I turned and looked at her. The girl from inside. The blonde one. She was smiling. I didn't have the energy to return it. 'Yeah?'
'That was really cool,' she told me like she knew exactly what cool was.
I must've been really confused. 'That?'
'Telling your old man off. I saw the guy you kicked out, too. I would've left if he came in.'
I couldn't help but smile now. 'At least someone believes in me.'
'I'm Andi,' she added.
'Jaxon.' After another second of thought, I realized there was a good chance my dad could come out at any moment. 'Listen, I don't really know what I'm going to be doing yet, but I know I'd wanna make plans with you.'
This made her smile even more. 'How about,' she said, taking the palm of my hand, 'you give me a call when you figure your life out.'
'Okay.'
'Don't take too long, though.'"
