We walked out of the house, but didn't go much farther than that. Lina couldn't seem to make herself go anymore. "Tomi, I have to go. I have to get out of here. My mom, what if she's in trouble? What if your mom was right?" Panic seeped into Lina's voice. She looked at me, as if I could possibly give her the answer. Her looking at me, though, it made me feel something. I wanted to protect her, no matter the risk. But there was something else too.
It was half impulse, half sick longing that led me to lean into Lina, mid-panicked sentence. My lips hit hers, and they stilled for a moment, until she finally kissed me back.
I was so happy I could've cried. Instead, I wrapped my arms around her, holding her tight against me, breathing her in. Her hands traced across my hair, around my back.
It took the mental reminder that my mom was just on the other side of the door next to us for me to pull away from Lina.
I left my arms around her, though, so she was looking up at me. She smiled and tossed a piece of hair out of my eyes. "Was that your way of telling me to shut up?"
"Actually, I was trying to tell you I'll be here no matter what. Including going to save your mom, if need be," I explained, then smiled. "I know that can sound a lot like shut up, though."
A bubbled laughed snuck out from her. I could see in her eyes as the panic slipped a little further away. She leaned up and kissed me again, this time quickly. "Then I think we might have another adventure on our hands."
"I have one request before we start this adventure," I said. Lina raised an eyebrow at me. "That I can be your boyfriend on this adventure."
She grinned at me, a grin that could've lit up an entire city. "Yes," she said. "Yes, that'd be fine."
"Fine?" I asked, but she was already going to kiss me again, and I knew it was so much better than fine.
"What are we going to do now?" Lina asked, panic from earlier coming back, though not nearly as intense. My hand was gripped around hers, as if that could somehow help.
We had already started walking back in the direction of Jaxon's house, but I didn't know where we were really going. "What do you want to do?"
"You mean besides save my mom?"
"You know what I mean," I told her. "Right now."
"That is what I want to do right now. Get back and save her."
I shook my head. "Alright. But how? We don't have tickets home for another couple of days. I can't see any other way to get there."
Lina said nothing to this, and I was afraid, once again, that I had said the completely wrong thing. "Lina?" I tried as quietly as possible. "Look, we can figure something out. Maybe...maybe Andi and Jaxon will know somebody with their own boat, and we can hitch a ride all the way back to Republic City. And we'll save your mom and makes sure your dad gets thrown in jail. It'll be okay."
Lina said nothing. She did, however, give my hand a light squeeze. I returned it, trying to tell her it would all be okay.
"A boat?" Andi asked, like I had recently lost my mind. "Why the hell do you need a boat?"
I sighed, knowing the truth was about to come out. "We have reason to believe that Lina's mom is in a lot of danger, and we need to get back to the city as soon as possible."
"Hey, I know!" Jaxon began.
"Jaxon, shut up. We're not helping them until they tell us everything." Andi's venomous glare came back to us. I couldn't help but think she seemed less like my sister than she had yesterday. "Where were you guys, really? Because I don't see any groceries."
"We went to see your mom," Lina admitted before I could say anything else.
Andi glare got even colder. "I can't believe this."
"Don't be mad," I started. "I had to ask her some more things."
"And did you like what you found?" she demanded, already knowing the answer. The answers I got were the same ones she had. The ones that led her to avoid Mom. The ones that led me to shut her out of my life again.
"No," I grumbled. "No, I didn't. But I'm happy I have them now. And Lina got answers, too. Now she's got a limited window to try and change her future. Can you help us?"
Andi glanced at Jaxon. He didn't even try to conceal his nod. I felt myself smile a little, regretting every bad thought I'd ever had about him.
"My mongoose lizard," Jaxon began. "He can swim and carry people on his back. You can take him to the city."
"That sounds crazy," Lina said, not even sugarcoating it.
"It's our only option," I reminded her gently.
"And," Andi added, "Jaxon and I are coming with. It sounds like you need back up for this mission."
Now it really was crazy. "We don't need backup," I told her.
"You need Pablo," Jaxon put in. "You only get him if we come." I should've known he would blindly side with Andi.
"Like I said, completely crazy," Lina said once again. "Sadly, crazy is all we have left. Fine, you all can come. But how many people can fit onto one mongoose lizard?"
There was a general shrug from Andi and Jaxon. Clearly these limits had never been tested before.
