Lina had spent the rest of the day in a tense panic. Her plans to leave that very day were shattered after it came to our attention that we didn't even have real transportation. Jaxon said he's check with the petting zoo owner to see if he could get his hands on another mongoose lizard. It was just a waiting game now.
"We have a week," I tried to console Lina. "That means we'll be there ages before your dad can hurt her."
"A week until he gets caught," Lina corrected me. "He could've had her in his clutches since I left, knowing she couldn't protect herself."
"Does that really sound like your dad?" I wondered.
Lina took the question much more seriously than I intended. Looking me right in the eyes, she said, "I wouldn't know. In the two weeks I spent with him, I watched him bloodbend more than once, saw him kill a man, and was led to believe that he had done many even worse things before then. So, Tomi, I don't know."
I bit my lip, knowing I had just opened the flood gates. Lina sighed to herself, putting her head in her hands.
"Have you called her?" I asked, trying to gear the conversation back to the person in danger.
"Three times since we've been here. No answer. Sometimes, she just wouldn't pay the phone bill, but she knew I was away..." Lina shook her head, like it was all too much to deal with.
I wrapped an arm around her in an attempt to make he feel better, but I knew there wasn't much I could do other than that. As long as we were in the Earth Kingdom, we were all a bit helpless.
"I'm sure this will all work out," I told her, yet I was having trouble even convincing myself. I wasn't my mom. I couldn't see the future.
Lina shurgged, but said nothing more. I could feel her getting lost in her own thoughts. Deciding to let her be, I made up some excuse about starting to pack and escaped the kitchen.
Walking into my guestroom to starting packing things, I bumped into Andi on her way out of the room.
"Sorry," she muttered.
"My ba--What are you carrying?"
Instead of covering it up, Andi grinned. She held out the strange shaped package that must've come from the guestroom. "This is Jaxon's. He wanted to bring it to Republic City."
"But what is it?" I probed.
She took a small step away from me and pulled the object out of it's molded wood case. In her hand, and pointed in my direction, was a sharp, silver sword. Without thinking, I took a step away. I must've really looked shocked, because Andi burst out laughing.
"It's a long sword," she explained, slipping it back into its case. I managed to nod.
"And he knows how to use that?"
"Of course he does. Look, because he's not a bender, sometimes it's dangerous being on your own," the lightness gradually fleeted from Andi's voice.
Not sure what to say, though I had been the equivalent of Jaxon not long ago, I simply told her, "That'll be useful, then. If we need it."
She raised an eyebrow. "You think there will be a fight?"
Think? I was almost sure of it. It took me a minute to realize just how behind on this Andi was. I had to tell her something, at least about Lina's dad.
