Everyone was anxiously sitting in the waiting room of the hospital. Amethyst refused to make any eye contact and continuously stared at the ground. There was nothing she could say. The person she considers a sibling and who she loves the most is unconscious and trapped in a hospital bed for who knows how long. That is if he even makes it out alive

As for Garnet, she was leaning up against a nearby wall with her arms crossed. Even though she was crying on the inside, she had to keep her outward appearance composed. Someone has to be strong in this situation. And she has always been the best at being the rock that holds everyone steady

Greg and Pearl were the most shaken up about this. Greg was nervously pacing back and forth in the room, waiting for news about his son. Something. Anything. He needed to make sure his baby was okay. "H-he's going to be okay, right?"

Garnet answered as calmly as possible. "I have no doubt that he'll be fine. Right Pearl?"

No response. All she could do was sit there with a hand covering her mouth and tapping her foot anxiously on the floor. She was paralyzed with fear, trying to process exactly what happened to her precious child. Did she inadvertently cause this? Was she not paying close attention to his needs? These were all thoughts that ran through her mind. Guilt and regret slowly rose up inside her. A twinge of pain hit her chest. And even though she didn't really have a stomach, it felt like she was going to throw up

Garnet sat next to her in hopes to provide her with some comfort. She gently placed a hand on her friend's shoulder, which made her tense up even more. "Pearl, it's going to be okay. This isn't anybody's fault."

Pearl started trembling as she felt even more guilty. Tears started swelling up in her eyes. She wished she could just heal Steven herself. Everything would be better. But no amount of gem powers can fix this. Garnet shifted to put her arm around Pearl's shoulders

In that moment, there was a flood

Pearl rested her head on the fusion's shoulder and sobbed. She tried not to make a scene but she couldn't hold back these emotions anymore

Garnet calmly rubbed Pearl's head to soothe her. After about 20 minutes, Pearl quieted down. Though neither of them moved. Pearl still had her head resting on Garnet's shoulder. Her eyes were very red and had bags under them. Her hair was a mess but she didn't care at this point

Garnet being the good friend that she is, continued to lovingly rub her head. It felt very soothing to Pearl. It made her feel safe and at home. She started to nod off a little. Though she didn't want to sleep in a public area so fought hard to stay awake

Just then the doctor showed up. Everyone immediately shot up from their seats. Greg was the first to be brave enough to face the music. "Is everything ok doctor? How's Steven?"

The doctor was very hesitant to speak at first. This part of the job was never easy. "Well....the surgery was a success. We managed to stop all blood loss and did a blood transfusion. But..."

Greg was becoming very impatient. Whatever the doctor was going to say, he just wanted to get it over with. "But?!"

"...Your son is in a coma."
