"Fullmetal Alchemist would never work as a musical" "WELL DEATH NOTE DID SO SCREW YOU"
Edward Elric- Definitely a tenor. I haven't been able to think of a specific actor in mind to play him though. One thing I do know is that I would DEFINITELY want this song to be used as a duet for Ed and Al:
Alphonse Elric- I think Al would be an alto/boy soprano, and he could be played by a boy or a girl. A choice I think would be great for Al is Sydney Lucas! She's best known for playing Young Allison (a tomboyish girl) in Fun Home. She's a terrific young actress with a lovely voice and I think her face/body type would also fit Al really well.
Roy Mustang- I have trouble deciding if I'd write Roy's role for a tenor or a baritone. Travis himself has a really deep voice but a lot of Roy's really intense scenes lend themselves well high notes...
Luckily, with a fabulous vocalist like Josh Young in this role I wouldn't have to choose! He's perfect for Roy on SO many levels, he's got the dark hair and smoldering eyes, the command of the stage, he's incredible at playing complex characters, and OH MY GOODNESS HIS VOICE. It's so resonant and rich and his face-melting high notes are just as incredible. He's played some of my favorite roles in musicals, including Che in Evita, Marius in Les Miserables, and most famously, Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar! I'm trying to write a solo for Roy titled "Rain", a ballad taking place after Hughes' funeral about his resolve to avenge him, and I reaaaally wish I could listen to him sing it
