Chloe's POV
Why is everyone so quiet today?

I expected people to be talking about Cecilia's party, but all I hear is about some accident.

What accident?

So at lunch, when I sat beside Ashley I turned to her to give me information. "What is everyone talking about?" I ask.

"You didn't hear?"

"No," I say. "That's why I'm asking."

"Samuel and Jakob got into a car accident," she says. "Samuel died."

What. The. Fuck.

"Your joking," I say.

She shakes her head. "They were on the way to Cecilia's party," she states. "When some idiot, who was drink driving, came on to their side of the road."

"Is Jakob okay?" I ask. I mean come on, I'm not that heartless.

"People have been saying some things, but I don't know if they are true," Ashley says.

Rhys walks over and sees my expression. "I'm guessing you just heard."

"Yeah," I whisper.

"Are you going to treat him different when he comes back?" Rhys asks.

"No," I answer, scoffing. "I will obviously give him my condolences for his loss, but I still hate his guts."

"Fair enough," Rhys says.

Bailey walks over and kisses Rhys passionately.

That was for my benefit.

"Hey baby," Rhys says, when she finally pulls away. She sits in his lap and strokes her hand up and down his arm. "Did you hear the news?"

"Yeah," she says. "Poor Samuel."

"Any of you going to his funeral?" Rhys asks.

"I'm not going," I say. "I didn't know him that well."

"Are you?" Bailey asks Rhys. He nods. "I'll come with you."

"Cool," he says.

"Chloe!" I hear my mum yell, as I was studying. "Someone's on the phone for you."

I quickly Mark my page and run downstairs. I grab the phone out of mums hand and hold it to my ear. "Hello?"

"Chloe," I hear a familiar feminine voice. "It's Monica."

Jakob's Mum.

"Uh hi," I say hesitantly.

"As you are aware, Jakob was in a car accident," she says.

"Yes I did hear about it," I murmur. "Is he alright?"

"He will be," she answers. "I just need a favour from you."

"Okay," I say.

"I need you to teach Jakob Braille."

Why does she want me to teach him Braille? Braille is for the-

Oh. My. God.

Jakob is blind.

"Look Monica-"

"I'll pay you," she says. "Please Chloe, we really need this."

I close my eyes and take a deep breath. "I'll do it."

"Thank you," she says. "Can you come over tomorrow?"

"Yeah," I sigh. "I'll be there after school."

"See you tomorrow then," Monica says and then hangs up.

"What did Monica want?" Mum asks, as she was serving up dinner.

"She wants me to teach Jakob Braille," I answer.

Mum hums. "Did you take it?"

"Of course," I say.

"That's good of you," Mum states. "I know how much you dislike Jakob."

I scoff. "Dislike doesn't describe what I feel towards Jakob."

"Dinner time!" Mum yells to the rest of them. "Honey, just don't be mean to him tomorrow," she says. "He's going through a lot."

"Right," I mutter, grabbing my plate.

What do you talk about, to a guy you've hated for four years and his best friend just died?

That's a sentence I'd never thought I'd say.

*
Rhys bursts out laughing, as I tell him my conversation with Monica last night.

"I'm going over there after school," I mutter, writing the answer to question 12.

It was -9 by the way.

"Oh that's gold," Rhys laughs, clutching his stomach.

"You know what else is funny?" I ask, smirking. "Your relationship."

Rhys sighs. "Here we go."

"I'm not saying anything," I say. "I already said enough to Bailey."

"Look she's just protective," Rhys says. "Before Bailey and I were together, everyone wanted us to be a thing-" I gag. "And she still thinks you like me."

"Still?" I question. "When have I ever liked you?"

"She thinks that, everyone wanted us together, because you liked me," he states.

"Oh my god," I say, clutching my hair. "She's an actual nut case."

"Pretty much," Rhys says.

"Are you coming over Friday?" I ask, changing the subject.

"Yeah," he nods. "Bailey probably will too."

"Fuck," I whisper.

"It won't be bad," Rhys says. "She hardly ever gets rude with you around your parents."

"Yeah I guess," I mumble. "Just to let you know, if she says anything else, I will hit her."

"And just to let you know I will stop you," Rhys says.

I smirk. "You can try."

"I can beat your ass at anything," Rhys says.

"Oh yeah," I say. "You mean at Fortnite?"

Rhys grunts. "You just have luck."

"32 times?"

"Shut up," he mumbles.

"It's okay," I say pouting. "You always win at Candyland."
