There are tons of different kinds of gangs and mafias out there with all different focuses. Some center on drug trafficking while others literally control the areas that they're based in, taking over the politics and trade there. Some even do both, depending on how powerful they are!
The Italian Mafia, for instance, is a bit different than a drug cartel in Latin America or a gang in the United States. You have to decide which kind of real-life gang you want to base it off of–cause each one is very unique–and go from there!
