Y/N - Your name.
N/N - Nickname. When Y/N awoke, it was to an overwhelming smell of cleaner. It smelled strong of chemicals rather than the lemon used to try and give it a pleasant scent. It was almost nauseating. Steve sat off to her right, in a visitors chair that looked less than comfortable. It was a hospital green color and had thin wooden arm rests. He was on the phone with someone and looked awful, his head rest in his free hand, like he hadn't slept in a while.
"Yeah, the doc said she'll be okay." He rubbed his face and then his tired eyes. "Thank god."
He was silent as he listened to the other person on the line. Y/N could hear a faint voice, but couldn't make out who he was talking to. It sounded feminine.
"The son of a bitch put a knife through the center of her hand and grazed an artery in her arm. It tore open when she was trying to defend herself and she could have died. Her bed was soaked in blood and she was passing out from the blood loss before I could even call the ambulance." He breathed. His voice trembled. "Oh my god." She could hear the voice on the line say.
"I don't think she even knew how bad it was. I didn't think she was going to make it."
Y/N shifted her gaze away from her uncle and instead looked up at a low playing TV rolled in on a wooden stand. She stared at it for a few minutes, trying to distract herself from the pain that was starting to return now that she was awake. She shifted her arm uncomfortably, a little afraid to look at her wounds.
"Yeah.. yeah I'll tell her." Steve continued. "I'll keep you posted."
"Love you too, Bye." With that, he stood and walked over to the wall where Y/N's bed was hooked up. He placed the phone on the receiver and adjusted the cord so that it wasn't in the way of anything.
"Who was that?" Y/N asked, her voice was soft. She looked up at Steve who finally noticed she was awake. He looked as though he might cry. "That was Grandma." He said, rubbing his eyes again in an attempt to hide it. "How you doin' kid? You scared the hell out of me."
"I'm okay, I think." She said, smiling up at him. "Thanks to you. It was that bad huh?"
Steve nodded silently, holding back more tears. He bit his lip. "Yeah." Was all he could manage to say.
"If you hadn't been there.. I'd probably be dead." She whispered.
Steve shook his head. "You gotta give yourself a little more credit than that." He said. "Not many people can take a whole knife to the hand and have an artery cut and still live to tell the tale." He tried smiling at her to lighten the mood a bit, although now that she could see him up close it was clear he had been crying. His face was red, especially his eyes. Y/N nodded softly and then looked back up at the television. Gale was on.
'Michael Becker, age 18 was found dead in his Woodsboro home last week. I believe it to be the same killer as before. The victim was gutted and hung from a tree on the property, much like his cousin Casey Becker one year ago. Will police ever catch on to this killer? Will the people of Woodsboro ever be able to sleep peacefully in their beds without the fear of being next? Or will more families and teens of our small community live in fear?'
Y/N sat up abruptly, hissing in pain when she bumped her arm on accident against the railing of the hospital bed. "Steven turn that up." She said, eyes locked on the television. "Be careful Y/N." Steve warned, concern on his face. He glanced up at the TV and scoffed. "Ugh.. Don't watch that shit N/N. It'll only make you feel worse." He reached over to press the button to turn it off.
"NO, please." Y/N protest, reaching towards the TV instinctively with her uninjured arm. "I want to at least see this last part. Then we can turn it off.. okay?" She pleaded. Steve could see the urgency in her eyes and it bothered him, but he reluctantly moved his hand from the off button and instead pressed the volume up a few notches. "Fine.. but once she starts blabbing about her book.. we're turning it off." He teased, trying to lighten the mood.
