CHARMING STRANGERS AND BRAWLS WITH WEIRDOS
CASS
CASSIOPEIA WATCHED the doors of Griddy's Donuts open and a very angry looking man walked in with a boy around 16 trailing behind him, looking around the shop with wonder. The man had dark hair and steely hard eyes, but the boy was more bouncy and well- boyish.
Cass watched his movements carefully. He was careless, and the Armani suit his father was flaunting told Cass all she needed to know.
Cass had money, and didn't really need anything, but she was bored, and old habits die hard.
"Star, don't be a jackass just because you can." Jet said sternly. The girl raised a brow at him, and he smirked. "Kidding, kidding." The man sat down at the counter and continued chewing out someone over the phone. "You said the car BMW would be done by 4:00! What time is it? No Jessie, tell me what time it is!!"
Cass was getting ready to start the heist when the boy sat directly in front of her. "Hello!" He said excitedly. The girl was taken aback by his forwardness, but smiled anyway. "Hey?" She said, a slight question in her voice. "My name's Xavier Wright." He said, and stuck out his hand. Cass took it, expecting a handshake but receiving a kiss on the knuckle.
She chuckled nervously.
"Cassiopeia, but everybody just calls me Cass." He smiled even brighter, which Cass found impressive. "It's nice to meet you Cass, so what brings you to-" He paused and looked at the sign next to the door. "Griddy's donut shop?" Cass had to admit, he was smooth. Dorky, but smooth.
"Well I used to come here with my brother, and I was passing by, so I decided to reminisce." Cass explained, swirling her spoon around her almost-empty
cup of black coffee. Xavier nodded."What about you? What brings you to this retro café?"
Xavier smiled and shrugged. Me and my dad," He gestured to the cold man he had walked in with. "Are stuck downtown for a few hours."
Cass nodded, and the small old woman working the shop walked up to the pair. Cass read her name tag. Agnes. "Hello dears, would you like anything?" Xavier smiled. "A green tea for me, and a refill for the lady, please." The waitress smiled sweetly. "Okie dokie then, It'll be right out."
The boy turned to Cass. "Tell me about yourself."

After talking to Xavier for around an hour, the boy had to leave, but not before giving Cass his number. She found herself a bit upset at his absence, but cheered up when Jet reappeared where the new boy was minutes ago. "That took forever Star, dear God." The girl made sure that Agnes was in the back before speaking to him. "Sorry I was having a conversation with someone besides you or Diego." She said sarcastically.
"You're forgiven but don't let it happen again. Did you at least get his wallet? I mean-" Jet was interrupted by the ding of the bell from the door, and a boy walked through.
Cass felt like she couldn't breathe. She had seen him somewhere, but couldn't put her finger on it. His eyes locked with hers from across the diner and it clicked.
He was the boy in the portrait.
The boy looked spooked as well. "Cassie.." He whispered, almost inaudible, but Cassiopeia caught it. She stood up, knocking her chair behind her. "How do you know my name?" She panicked, searching his face. He looked at her in awe.
"It's been so long.." He trailed off. "I missed you so much." He started to walk towards her, but she backed away. "Don't come any closer!" She yelled, pissed that no one else was in the shop. Hurt flashed in the boy's forest green eyes. "I-" He was cut off by the door opening once again, and masked men stepping in.
Cassiopeia watched as the boy's face automatically hardened. "I thought I would have more time before you found me." He said calmly, and Cass noticed him slip a butter knife off of one of the tables. She knew a fight was about to break out so she grabbed a glass off table.
"Just come quietly, the boss wants both of you." The boy stiffened.
"What would she want with her?"
Yeah man why does anyone want me?
The man ignored him. "Come on, do you think I want to kill a couple of kids? Go home with that on my conscience?" Cass decided it was time to rise up or stand down.
"Oh I wouldn't worry about that, won't be going home." She said, smiling sweetly. Both the boy and the men looked at her confused, and in a heart beat, the glass she was holding was broken in half and being lodged in one of the men's necks.
All hell broke loose, and soon the dark-haired boy was fighting alongside her.
Cass grabbed a fork off of a table, and while the boy disappeared and reappeared- she would ask about that later- she slid in between her attacker's legs, then popped up just as fast, and stabbed him in the back of the neck. The man collapsed, and Cass noticed that the mysterious boy seemed to be having trouble with one of the masked men. "Hey asshole!"
The man turned to look at the small girl, with the boy still struggling in his grip. She smiled widely and shot her hand out, causing the man to start burning. He tried to keep his composure, but ended up crumpling to the floor in agony.
The boy stood over him with a scowl, having just gotten his air back, and crushed his face with the heel of his school-boy shoes.
When the mystery boy turned to Cass, he had blood covering his face and clothes.
"Thanks sunshine."
Cassiopeia straightened at the nickname. No one had ever called her that, and she didn't know how to feel. She then noticed a beeping noise, and looked down between her feet. She bent down and grabbed a small, green, blinking button. The brunette looked at the boy.
"This yours, Sparky?" The boy grinned at the nickname. He held his hand out and Cass tossed it to him. While he inspected it, she said, "Funny, you know my name, but I don't know yours."
"Yet." The boy mumbled under his breath.
"My name is Five Hargreeves." He said, and grabbed a knife.
Cass panicked until she realized that he was cutting himself open.
Wait.
"Hey, hey, hey! What the hell are you doing?" She demanded, crossing the room in a few strides and snatching the knife from him, but he had already pulled something metal out of his arm.
He looked at her. "You look just like I remember." He said softly.
"You keep saying that, but I can't seem to remember ever having met you!" The girl said, frustrated and wrapping a cloth around Five's gushing wound. The boy realized how close she was and how she was caring for him, and blushed.
"You haven't met me yet."
