At some point in time in London, Mrs. Dark made Church immortal by performing a necromantic ritual on him. In 1978, Mrs. Dark kept the cat to sacrifice him to bring her sister, Mrs. Black back. But before she could do this, Church was rescued by James Carstairs. He took Church to the London institute and christened him 'Church'.

After Jem turned into a Silent Brother, Church missed him terribly. When Magnus Bane heard of this, he took the cat with him to New York. However, Church returned.

When Church came to the New York Institute, it seemed to be like a guide since it knew exactly where to find every Institute resident. In May 2008, Jem met Church and the two reunited at Luke and Jocelyn's wedding reception. Jem then took the cat to Los Angeles without the permission of the Lightwoods.

After the wedding, Church was found at the LA Institute's doorstep with Jem's previous name 'Zachariah' signed on it. Not being able to decide as to what to do, Emma called Clary. Clary then told Emma of Church's history. Emma and Julian decided to keep the cat. Previously, Emma was worried about caring for Church but she learnt that he wouldn't live there permanently. Church left the Institute for days at a stretch and returned with little shells on his neck, ones that Emma and Julian both kept.
