Maxwell Lightwood was the third and youngest of Maryse and Robert's children. He was often overlooked. Around the time when Clary Fray came to New York, he was in Alicante with his parents who were there for Clave business. He returned and then bonded with Clary over their love for manga.

Not long after, the members of the Institute were told to travel to Alicante for safety reasons and to discuss Valentine's return. Max, along with his siblings, stayed with their cousin Aline Penhallow. One night, while he was supposed to be in bed, Max saw someone climbing the demon towers and disabling their wards. He told the others of the sight but they ignored him, claiming that he must've imagined it. When the demons attacked them, Max and Isabelle stayed behind at the Penhallows' house. Sebastian hit Max on the head with the hammer, intending to kill him as the boy had seen Sebastian's true nature. Sebastian tried to do the same for Isabelle but she survived. Max, however, didn't survive and he died holding the toy soldier Jace had gifted him. His body was later moved to the Accords Hall where his family mourned for him.

His death tore his family apart. Alexander managed to hold himself together. Isabelle blamed herself for not listening to him. In a dream Lilith had sent, Jace saw Max giving him instructions to cut himself. In Edom, Alec imagined Max holding out a bouquet to him. Isabelle imagined him as his 9 year old self. Jace imagined Max to be stuck in a cage while he and Sebastian sat on thrones.
