So as you know the place where the Shadowhunters of New York reside is known as the New York Institute. The location is exactly as it says in the title which is in New York. Pretty basic stuff right? Okay well now we're going to get a bit deeper.

Basically no one besides the Nephilim and few downworlders know that it exists. That's because downworlders and shadowhunters have always kind of had this feud thing going on, so now downworlders are prohibited from entering the institute. This is probably already covered but the downworlders consist of Warlocks, Werewolves, Vampires, Seelies etc.

Now shadowhunters are the only ones that can see the Institute along with a couple of the downworlders that they allow in there with them. This is so that humans or mundanes as they call them won't ever know they exist. Even though there has been a few slip ups.
