Praetor Lupus literally means "Wolf Guardians".
The alliance was created by the werewolf Woolsey Scott in the 1800s.
The Praetor is the first and largest self-policing organization among the Downworlders. The alliances job is to guide and protect newly turned and 'orphaned' vampires and werewolves.
Being transformed into a vampire or werewolf obviously isn't one of the easiest things that can happen to one. Afterall it's definitely manageable if you have a sire or a pack leader (or in general a clan or a pack). But what if you don't have one? Then you get a member of the Praetor Lupus to your side. They teach you everything you need to know about the downworld, how to feed, how to behave, how to survive.
Joining the Praetor Lupus is quite simple: You just have to go there and ask. Most of the members are actually orphaned werewolves that were saved by the organisation, so they decide to give some of the support back and just stay with the Praetor Lupus, rather than searching for a pack or creating a new one.
Most of them live in the "Praetor House" and all of them wear a gold medallion around their necks, with a pattern of leaves on it, an imprint of a wolf's paw, and an engraving of the organization's slogan "Beati bellicosi", which means "Blessed are the warriors".
After the death of most of its members at the headquarters New York, 2007, Maia Roberts was sent to take the Praetor Lupus over.
