Sentinel was mentally and physically abusive to both Optimus and Megatron when they still considered each other brothers and called Sentinel "sire". Though, Sentinel was also quite unstable, and had constant mood swings, going from calm, to violent, to apologetic and kind. This is why Optimus was so cold about killing him, and why Megatron was ready and willing to betray the alliance at a time where it could go more wrong than ever.
