"God, Pavarti, what happened to you?"

You were stood in the doorway to one of the stalls in the girls bathroom, watching as Pavarti Patil leaned over the toilet and puked the remnants of her dinner into the bowl. "I don't know, I think it was that pastry those Weasley's gave me." She muttered, her words slurred from the sickness no doubt swirling in her stomach. Sure, the twins loved to play a good prank, but this was a prank gone wrong it looked like. You sighed and smiled sadly at her though she couldn't see, suddenly remembering where she was meant to be tonight. "Does Harry know you won't be able to make it?" You asked the dark haired witch to which she shook her head, face still buried in the toilet as you grimaced at the sound of her vomiting again for what felt like the 20th time that night. "I'll figure something out." You informed her and patted her back softly, feeling bad for leaving her on her own in the bathroom but surely she could at least get back to the dorms herself, they weren't that far. You left the stall and headed for the door, stepping out into the hallway to see Hermione Granger walking past just as you did. She caught sight of you and smiled at your outfit, her eyes scanning the dress before meeting your eyes again. "Ah, hello Y/N. On your way to the ball?" She practically read your mind and you nodded, stepping forward and taking her arm in yours before walking with her to the Great Hall.

"Pavarti's throwing up in the bathroom, she won't be able to come tonight." You informed her and Hermione's face fell, her kind heart hating to hear someone wasn't feeling their best. "That's awful. Wait, who's Harry supposed to dance with now?" She worked out the same thing you had earlier with Pavarti in the bathroom, shrugging your shoulders as the pair of you turned the corner to the hallway that held the staircase to the Great Hall. "I don't know, you might have to step in for her." You joked and Hermione laughed with you, knowing how much she despised formal dancing. She was more of a carefree dancer when you got her loosened up enough, surprisingly hating the restrictions of the waltz. "God no, could you see me out there? Stepping all over his toes and making a fool of myself?" She giggled and you joined in with her, your eyes sparkling with warmth at her friendship. You finally reached the staircase but stopped at the top, a sudden wave of nervousness overcoming you when you peeked around the corner to see Ron Weasley and Harry Potter at the bottom chatting to each other.

"You look beautiful, don't worry." Hermione seemed to read your mind at your nervousness, a warm smile gracing her face to reassure you and you smiled softly in return. She unhooked her arm from yours and stepped away to come around the corner and step down the staircase to Ron and Harry waiting at the bottom, the former was probably more eager to see her than the latter. You smoothed the light material of the black dress that fell to your feet, the black fading into a deep blue past your knees. It was a one shoulder dress with the middle embellished with jewels, cinched a little tight at the waist but nonetheless accentuating your curves. You kept Hermione's words in mind and stepped out from the corner, thanking God you decided to wear the shortest pair of heels you could find as to not trip and fall. You glided down the staircase with your dress in one hand and the other held the railing, trying not to watch your feet but instead focus on Harry stood at the bottom. He hadn't noticed you coming yet but you caught his attention out of the corner of his eye apparently, turning his gaze to you and his eyes clouding with an emotion you couldn't place. He had been laughing at something either Ron or Hermione had said, his smile wide when he turned but faded when he saw you.
