One of the days Tom went to school, wanting to move past this all, it was still too much. Mr. Dobbins had finally called on him and Tom could feel Huck's and Becky's eyes on him and he could just feel the energy of years of this, compacted.

This wasn't what he wanted for himself.
And yet, this continued throughout the day, in every class.
After school, he came home.

His heart was so heavy. It had been feeling more and more weighted with every day he went to school. Every day, after it all, his eyes stung and he just felt so overwhelmed. And there wasn't even anything different about each day-- it was just that every day was the same and horrible and stressful. Tom couldn't imagine doing this for even another day.

He packed a bag.
Packed clothes. Packed whatever he would need. And when the sun had set and it was dark enough, he went to the woods.

Tom felt so heavy. The weight of the bag just brought him down more, and he wanted this to be over already.
He wanted to be gone.

Tom walked through the woods, into the spot he usually went to, one last time.

Huck was there.
