Tom skipped school the next day.

He couldn't face any of them. He couldn't face changing everything so suddenly. He said he was sick when Aunt Polly checked they had left, and from the look in his eyes and the redness in them and the heat on him, she believed him. He felt sick, too—he felt a fever in his skin and an ache in his stomach. He wished he could run away without consequence. He wished he could just love Becky like he once had.

Tom laid in bed, staring at the ceiling. He wished he didn't love Huck. He wished Huck had never came back.
