8: Love and Lies

Niko's POV

I shove the blonde out of my door, though she begs me to stay. What was her name? Alexa? Alice? It's not in my care to remember. The majority of wolves wait for their mate, but after seven years of searching I've kind of given up. I've searched my neighboring packs, but quite frankly I'm too busy to search any further.

"Sir, I hate to bother you but a fire-lord and something we can't trace just entered the territory." Aca, my beta informs me through our mind link.

"Of which appearance?" I question.

"Red-haired fire-lord with an unknown white-haired female." Aca replies, sharply.

"Is the female young or old?" I ask.

"Young, 17 or so." Aca replies, interest clear in his mind.

"Where are you watching them from?" 

"Hundred metres away, hidden behind trees," He replies, "Fire-lord is embracing the female, I think we'll need some backup."

"On my way. I have nothing better to do anyway." I say, ignoring the immense pile of documents on my desk.

"Careful. The fire-lord looks aggravated." Aca whines.

"Aca, I'm an Alpha. What's he going to do, burn me?" I chuckle earning a yap of laughter from Aca. I run through the pack house, startling a few wolves in the process.

"Off so early, Alpha?" Maddox laughs. He's snuggling with his mate Koda on the couch. 

"Fire-lord and some female in my pack lands." I roll my eyes and smile at them. They're sweet, truly.

"Maybe she's your mate." Koda giggles and Maddox pokes him in the cheek. 

"Maybe." I sigh and wave before sprinting into the clearing before the trees.

"Wolf form or skin?" I ask Aca.

"Wolf." He replies and I shift quickly into my deep, grey wolf. It doesn't take long for me to come into the clearing. My eyes first catch the red-headed fire-lord who's hunched over a small body. Her hair is white as snow and her fair skin looks as smooth as silk. Her eyelids are closed and she looks like a sleeping angel. The fire-lord whispers something to the girl and nuzzles his head into her. This action alone lights a fire inside me I didn't know I possessed.

"Niko, what are you doing?" Aca yells inside my head. Before I know it I'm jumping into the clearing and crouching as if to pounce.

"I didn't know I was on your territory, I'm sorry. I'll just be on my-"The fire-lord pulls the girl behind him in a protective manner.

"No, you won't be going anywhere." I growl, shifting into my human form.

"Please, I need to help my girl." His girl? Surely they're not fated for each other. My attention is taken to the girl as she shifts in her unconsciousness. Her scent is unusual, like fresh flowers and dew drops in spring. I heard meeting your mate is overpowering, you can smell them from a mile away. I know this beauty is not mine but I can't deny my want for her. But suddenly another scent mingles with hers, that of pure blood, blood that I can only compare to that of a deer's. That of prey. She is a human.

"You have a human." I bark, "How?"

"None of your business!" He growls back to me. I absorb his remark and inhale again. Having the last human in the world could help me achieve so much, power, money, admiration, never mind her beauty. That's something I can keep for myself.
