Family, good for nothing

Rick P.O.V

I made the call to get away from Atlanta after the CDC. There was nothing left for us here, except for death. I finally decided to follow Shane's advice & go for Fort Benning. Everyone seemed on board with that. They were all hoping for some peace & safety. An army base should be a good start.

While everyone started packing & routing a path, I talked with Lila. I needed to know if we needed time for her to find her family or if she was going solo or maybe wait for Duane & Morgan. She decided to stay with us as her dad's place was off the main highway along the way. She figured a suburb might also be a good scavenging place since it was secluded. I ran this plan by Shane & he agreed.

The day of us leaving Atlanta I needed to warn Morgan & Dwayne. Like clockwork, I found a rooftop at dawn for a decent signal. The others waited in their cars for me outside the city.

"I guess I'm losing hope that you can hear me. But there's always that chance, isn't there? That slim chance. It's all about slim chances now. I tried to do everything right, keep people safe." I vented

"I tried, Morgan. I tried. Our group's smaller now. We lost another, day before last. It was her choice. Not Lila. She's safe. But, the other woman. I won't say I blame her, but she lost faith." I shared

"The C.D.C was a dead end. I met a man there, a scientist. He told me something. He told me..." I continued but stopped myself

"It doesn't matter. What matters is we're moving on. Atlanta's done. We're gonna try for Fort Benning. Look for Lila's family on the way." I shared

"We're facing a long, hard, journey, maybe even harder than I can imagine. But it can't be harder than our journey's been so far, can it? 125 miles. That's what lies ahead." I rambled

"And I'm trying hard not to lose faith. I can't. If I do, the others...my family, my wife, my son. Lila too now. The're so few of us left now. So we've got to stick together, fight for each other, be willing to lay down our lives for each other if it comes to that. It's the only chance we've got." I reminded myself

"Be careful out there, Morgan. I hope you and Duane are okay. Stay off the road. Keep moving. Keep your eyes open. I don't know, just...just be safe." I warned

"Maybe we'll see you in Fort Benning someday. Rick signing off." I wished before heading back

~ 2 days later ~

We were about a 1/4 of the way to Fort Benning when we made the detour to Lila's family. We had enough fuel to head back to the road if this was a bust. Lila directed me to the house as I moved upfront in the station wagon. She was getting nervous the closer we got. I guess she wasn't too happy about seeing them.

It took a few turns from the main road to get to the housing development. It was nestled alongside the woods & on a side road. You really had to know it was here to find your way. We passed through a guard post as the gates were left open. The street looked like my own neighbourhood. A few cars were strewn along the road. The large country houses were dirty & a few had opened doors.
