"Extra large cold brew with sweet cream to go," Shawn called out. Camila grabbed a cup and began making the drink. The shop was extremely busy and it was only the two of them working. Typically that scenario would put Camila in a horrible mood but she couldn't bring herself to be upset today - she had too many things to be happy about.
Things were going shockingly well with her and Shawn outside of work, and not just at the club. She truly felt like they were starting to become friends. They would text each other casually to chat about anything and everything. Jenna warned her that she was playing a dangerous game but Camila didn't really care; she trusted herself and she knew where to draw the line.
"Just don't let yourself fall in love with him," Jenna cautioned.
"I won't."
And she didn't. He was her boss while they were at the coffee shop, and outside of the coffee shop he was a friend who paid to have a physical connection with her. They weren't in love. Another reason she couldn't bring herself to be upset that day? She had recently been offered a huge opportunity in the art world. Would it be something that would make her a household name? No. But it was a way for her to get her foot in the door and that was enough for her.
"You're in a good mood," Shawn noted after he watched her pass the drink to the customer with a wide smile on her face.
"I am," she said with a grin. "I'm doing an art showcase at the museum tonight...which still doesn't seem real honestly."
"Seriously?" he said excitedly. "Oh my god, Camila...that's so incredible."
"Thanks," she said shyly. "I'm really excited...but also really nervous. I don't know, the style of the pieces I'm showing tonight are quite a bit different than the stuff I usually make. I'm also like, horribly terrified that no one will show up."
"I'm sure that won't be the case," he said with certainty. "If the quality of these new pieces are anything like the things I've seen from you then I'm sure you'll do just fine."
His kind words didn't make her any less nervous, though - and as she stood in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art looking at her own paintings hanging up she felt like she could vomit. There were definitely a lot of people there but most of them were there to see the other artists being showcased, not her. She didn't really care, though. As long as they were still looking at her art she'd consider it a win.
"These are pretty impressive." The voice was deep and familiar and immediately gave her butterflies despite not even seeing the face attached to the voice yet. She didn't need to see who it was though; she knew.
"What are you doing here?" Camila asked as she turned around to face him.
"I didn't want you to be able to say no one showed up," Shawn said with a shrug. "That, and I'm just a really big fan of you as an artist."
"I'm well aware," Camila snorted.
"I was talking about your paintings," he clarified as his cheeks turned pink.
"I know," she giggled. "Thank you." Shawn nodded and looked around at some of the pieces of her art hanging around them.
"So you painted these?" he asked. Camila nodded. One painting in particular caught his eye. "Is that...a butt?"
