Chapter 1

Morgan had learned pretty quickly after her move to Boston that the northeastern United States was a bitterly cold hellscape for the latter half of the year.

It was barely October, and Morgan already had to bundle up in her winter coat, hat, gloves, and scarf before heading out to work in the mornings. While she didn't really mind colder weather, she couldn't remember her hometown of St. Louis getting this cold so early in the year. It didn't help that the time she left for work was always at the coldest part of the morning, where everything was covered in a layer of frost and her breath came out in cloud puffs.

Morgan now rubbed her hands together as she stepped outside this chilly Monday morning, ready to head off to work. Her apartment complex was thankfully only a fifteen-minute drive from the marketing firm where she worked, but if she didn't hurry she would likely be late.

The normal Boston city traffic greeted her as she drove through the streets, and the catchy pop music playing from the local radio station filled her otherwise quiet ride. Even though her little Prius heated up rather quickly, Morgan couldn't help but feel a creeping sense of dread the closer she got to her office... a feeling she had gotten used to lately.

Suck it up, Cahill. It's just another day.

Morgan shook her head and tried to focus on what she had to do today: there was a new medical supplier company she was going to be consulting for, and she was planning on putting together a presentation about digital advertising strategies with some of their in-house web developers. It was an important project that she wanted to devote 100% of her attention to.

Morgan turned her car into a sprawling industrial park, then turned left onto a drive leading to the biggest and most impressive building in the lot. The steel and glass structure that was the Valcove building went up ten stories, with several smaller buildings on either side framing the circular drive that came up to the front door. The whole building took up several blocks of the industrial park, and the very top floor housed the largest company in the building and Morgan's workplace: Lawrence & Starling Advertisers. Morgan couldn't help but feel proud of being one of the people who got to work at such a beautiful high-end corporate establishment.

Though, Morgan had to admit, she didn't always feel very fortunate to be working at Lawrence & Starling. But that was a whole different story she didn't want to think about.

Morgan parked in the employee lot in the back before getting out of her car and walking toward the entrance. After walking through the front doors, she showed her badge to the security guard before walking through the metal detectors. She stepped through the second set of doors which opened automatically for her and walked into the beautiful front atrium.
