I stare at the mirror contemplating if I want my bouncy dirty, long blonde curls, out or stuffed in a bun. Of course, mother thinks I look pretty with my hair down, I don't see the reason of it. It always gets in the way and most day's it doesn't work with me. I wish I can just cut it, start fresh, but mother won't let me. "Hair is a girls crown." Her voice beams through my mind, my eyes roll up at the thought of it. I place my hair in a neat bun instead and place my clothes on.

This being the last year of high school for me, nothing had changed besides it being another year of being poked and laughed at by the idiots of the school. Along with another year of my mother and father pushing me to go to Yale.

I take off the long buttoned down yellow skirt that passes my knees. I would've thought the brown belt my mother got with it was going to look good, even though it did I don't feel like wearing this. When is she going to understand she can't shop for me anymore? Most of the things she buys are cute but others, not so much.

I take the skirt off leaving me in my white shirt and white undergarments. I rather just wear my regular blue jeans and converse. Something simple and me, not my mother.

"Marlie!" My father calls for me from the bottom of the steps.

I grab my bag and descend the wooden grey steps, giving my father a kiss on the cheek. "Morning." I smile. His beard had scratched my face. I hate that feelings. "Shave." I sneer at him.

"Good morning to you too. You can't be late if you want to get Valedictorian. What took you so long?"

"Come on dad, even you should know a lady takes time to get ready." I tell him.

"Want to take your time to get ready? Wake up earlier." He suggests. He knows just how bad I want to be Valedictorian. It has been a dream of mine since my school counselor mentioned it to me. To be the highest ranked student is an accomplishment I must finish before my time is done on this earth.

I walk towards the kitchen where I know my mother would be. "Good morning mom." I walk up from behind her, wrapping my arms around her stomach.

She turns with a wide smile. When she looks down her smile fades to confusion. "What happened to the skirt." I somehow knew she would notice and get upset. I get she got the skirt to be nice, but it doesn't suit me.

"I want to wear jeans." I say while clutching my bag.

Father comes from behind me. "What happened?"

Mom rolls her eyes and place the rag down. "Nothing, except the fact that your daughter doesn't like the outfit I bought for her the other day."

"The yellow skirt?" Father ask me, I look at him pleading to not be on her side about this.

Out of all of our differences just please be on my side, I thought to myself.

"I like that skirt, why don't you wear it?"
