Ashton's POV :

The last few days were supposed to be the happiest days, but it's not how I would describe these ongoing days. I was ecstatic when Scarlett agreed to move in with me but it wasn't going the way I imagined it.

Scarlett hasn't been herself post the incident at her flat. Although I have tried everything to bring her to her former self, she would be depressed all the time and hadn't come out of my condo since that day. I couldn't leave her alone in my flat even if it were the safest place for her to be. So I've shifted all my work here and I've been working from home for 10 days till today. I couldn't go on like this and I'm determined to put this to an end today.

Scarlett was staring into space deep in thoughts when I made my way into the bedroom.

"Kitten?"

No response

"Kitten?"

Still no response

"Scarlett". This time I made my presence known louder, which made Scarlett jump, her eyes wide with terror.

Seeing her in this state - constantly on edge, and feeling like something's gonna happen to her makes me want to tear that bastard to pieces.

I blame myself for what happened to her at the club. I should've been there for her. I should've been the one to protect her. I should've been the one to look after her. But I wasn't with her, I let it happen under my nose and I swore to myself I will never let that happen to her again. In order to make her strong, I was determined to do everything in my power. She should be able to defend herself in any situation with or without me. I looked at her distressed state which made my heart ache. How do I tell her to come out of this? How do I tell her to put all of this behind her and move on in life? It's not easy to forget something like this and on top of this, she is really sensitive. I will help her get out of this mess physically and mentally. I was almost at the end of catching the bastard who did all this. He was to pay for all the things he did to 'my' Scarlett.

"Hot chocolate with marshmallows, just the way you like it," I kept my tone light as I handed the cup to Scarlett.

"Thank you," she wrapped her fingers around the cup staring at the marshmallows that are bobbing in liquid but made no effort to drink it. By this point, she would normally have downed half the cup. She loved hot chocolate.

Grasping her chin, I tilted her face toward mine. "Please talk to me, kitten. You haven't been yourself lately. Is this how you're going to live forever? Getting rid of your happiness is the most important thing for him, and you're giving it to him"

Despite trying to articulate what she was feeling, Scarlett couldn't find the right words "Having lost my father, Amelia and Ethan were the only family I had and they always made sure I was happy and content. It's impossible for me to avoid feeling a sense of void in my life despite having amazing friends who treat me like family. My life feels fuller after you entered it. The fact that you care about me shouldn't make me lose you. You are too important to me to lose after my parents. You are better off without me. Besides looking for a flat, I've applied for a few jobs and they are awaiting my interview. Moving out of here as soon as possible would be better for both of us. I will also resign from the job" she finished as she burst into tears.

"The hell you will" I growled making her cry even more. What the hell was she even thinking? Leaving me? Resigning the job? Moving into a new flat? A shudder rolled through my body. Her confession hit me like a freight train, blindsiding me. It hadn't been something I expected her to say. Taking deep breaths to calm myself, I struggled to maintain my composure. If I lose my temper with her, she will be even more terrified.

"Are you planning on leaving me?"

"Trying to drag you along with me in this mess is not an option for me. You deserve someone better. Someone strong enough to face their fears with courage"

"Then become better because I only want you" I kept my voice calm and soothing.

Her eyelid was adorned with a tiny crystal tear "Ashton..."

" I mean it." With my thumb, I rubbed away the tear. There was a rage in my heart, seeing her distress and being aware that something could hurt her made the beast in me furious. My lips kissed the spot where the tear had fallen.

" I couldn't afford to lose you Ashton" She wrapped her arms around me and cried.

"You won't. I promise. I'd do anything for you. No matter how impossible. All I ask is that you trust me and stay by my side in any situation."

A smile emerged from Scarlette "I know. I trust you, more than I trust myself."

Have you ever met someone whose smile looks like it could make flowers grow? A small smile from her makes my heart go weak. That's the effect she has on me. My little Scarlett.

In each other's arms, we melted into slumber.
