Komal’s POV

"So how’s everyone? You guys doing alright?" I asked over the phone. I missed Beacon Hills with my whole heart but New York City has been my dream for years. Derek was okay with me leaving but I could see in his eyes that he didn’t want me to go. Not to mention leaving everyone else; they were like my family and there’s a giant void in my heart from missing all of them so much.

"We’re doing a fine; some bad times here and there but overall we’re good." I smiled and was about to ask something else but I could hear voices in the background:

"Is that Komal?! Can I talk to her?"

"No, let me talk to her; she likes me more!"

"No, I wanna talk to her. She hasn’t sent that cake she promised to make me!"

I laughed, “So, everything “fine”, right?” Derek laughed, “Well, we all miss you a lot. What do you expect?” Hearing his laugh made my heart flutter but the mood went immediately down realizing that he was on the other side of the country. I felt tears threatening to spill over so I sniffed, trying to make them not fall. Derek heard and sighed, “Komal, are you crying again?” I shook my head, “No…” Derek sighed again, “Komal…” As soon as the word left his mouth, I felt tears fall down my cheeks, “Okay, I am but it’s only because I miss you guys a lot; you especially.”

I heard movement in the background and a door closed, meaning Derek didn’t want anyone wanna hear him become a big softie. “Komal, you know I miss just as much.” I wiped a tear away, “Derek, I can’t do this anymore.” “Do what? You’re not-“  I wiped the fallen tears from my face, “No, no, I don’t mean I can’t be with you. I just…” I sighed, “I just can’t stand being away from you. I want to come back home.” Derek sighed, “I want you back too, but this job is your dream. Are you really ready to give that up?”

I scoffed, “Well, if it means that I can be near you when I want to be then yeah, I’d give it up.” “You’d give everything up just to come back home with me.” Derek’s voice sounded so happy and ecstatic that I’d drop everything just for him and it brought a smile to my face, “Derek, I love you. No job is more important than what we have.” There was silence and I couldn’t tell if he was there or not, but the when he spoke again; his voice was so low and deep that I could barely hear it, “I love you too, Komal. I miss you so damn much.”

I could hear his voice slightly crack, making the tears fall down my face once more. “I miss you too.” I said barely above a whisper. I looked at the time on my clock and realized that I’d better get to bed soon, “Uh, Derek, I-I have to go soon. I’ve got work tomorrow.” He sighed and I heard him sniff over the phone, probably trying to making any lingering tears disappear, “Alright, I’ll talk to you soon, okay?” I nodded, “Okay, bye.” “Bye.” I hung up the phone, letting all the tears fall down my face.

1 Week Later

After that call with Derek, I’ve been so depressed at work and I stopped going out with my new friends because all I could think about was Beacon Hills and Derek. I went to the corner store and got a tub of ice cream, went back to my apartment, and changed into my pajamas before settling into my sofa and turning on the first chick flick I could find. I could feel tears falling down my face and possibly into my ice cream, as I watch the guy standing outside the girl’s window, holding a boom box in his hands. I couldn’t help but wish I had something like that now.

As the movie credits rolled, I went to change the movie when I started hearing music playing outside. I sat the ice cream and looked out the window to see who was playing the music. I nearly screamed when I saw the one person in the world I’d never expect to be here. I opened the window and smiled brightly, “Derek?! What the hell are you doing here?!” He smiled up at me, turning the music off, “I knew you’d be miserable after we talked on the phone so I thought I’d come and surprise you. I did good, right?”

I laughed at the smile on his face and nodded, “You did better than good. This is phenomenal, Derek.” He smiled, looked down at the ground, and then looked back at me while pulling a small box from behind his back, “Happy Birthday, Komal.” I smiled, feeling a single tear fall down my face. I ran from the window and out of my apartment. I bounded down the stairs and out of the building. Derek was chuckling at me as I ran towards him and jumped into his arms. He held me tight and put his face into my neck.

I had one of my hands in his hair and the other wrapped around his neck, “Thank you so much, Derek. I can’t believe you’re here.” He set me back down on the ground and pushed loose strands of my hair behind my ear, looking into my eyes, “I wouldn’t miss your birthday for anything.” I stood on my tiptoes and kissed Derek, wrapping both arms around his neck while his wrapped around my waist. I pulled away and smirked, “So…whatcha ya get me? Tell me, tell me, tell me!” He laughed at my childish nature and removed his arm from around me, showing me the box from earlier.

I reached for it but Derek took a step from me. I looked confused, “What are you doing?” He smiled and with his free hand, grabbed my left hand and got down on one knee. I gasped, placing my other hand over my mouth, “Oh my god.” I said barely above a whisper but loud enough for him to hear. He opened the box to reveal another box but smaller then opened that one to reveal a gorgeous diamond ring, “Oh. My God.”

Derek smiled up at me, ”Komal, you have completely changed my life and I don’t know where I’d be if you hadn’t come into my life. After we hung up the phone, I had the ring in my hand and all I could think about was how I was going to do all this and I remembered that you telling me about your obsession of those 80s movies, so I thought I’d show up here, on your birthday, and play your favorite song outside your window and propose.” I lightly chuckled and pulled my hand from my mouth, smiling down at him, “Komal, I’ve thought of every moment we’ve had since day one and if I ever had the chance to do this all over again, I’d do it in a heartbeat. Komal, will you marry me?”

The tears were rushing down my face and all I could do was nodded. Derek smiled at me and placed the ring on my finger before wrapping his arms around me and lifting me off the ground. I placed my head in his neck and whispered, “This is the best birthday ever.” He put me back down and smiled at me, “I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you.” He leaned in slowly and kissed my with so much passion, my whole mind went blank. This was absolutely the greatest day of my life and I the best part is spending it with the one person I truly love.
