"Hating Simulator" was a game you found on the side of the road.

Well, to be exact, you found it in your driveway. The game seemed safe enough, and the disc was actually somewhat clean despite the fact of it being somewhat old, at least, that's what you thought, anyway. You still cleaned it up regardless. However, one thing that bothered you was the fact that you couldn't find any information on this game no matter how hard you tried. Google left you with no results, nothing desirable or longing. Maybe it was a modded copy of a preexisting game? Whatever it was, that didn't matter to you. You had a dating game - which you had now realised you practically got for free - that you can now waste hours of your life on!

And, to your surprise, when you popped the CD into your console, which, really, was just a DVD player hooked up to your computer through USB. The disc was a clean slate. No previous save, nothing. It was as if the game was never used before you pop it into the disc space, which was strange considering its outer appearance. Maybe it was wiped clean before you found it? That would seem about right.

Or at least, that's the answer that you had decided to accept as the truth. Your eyes stared directly at the screen that sat right in front of you. One strange thing was that no company logo showed up as the game booted up.

Which confused you, but you shrugged it off. So, Instead, it went straight to the title screen that held big, bouncy letters that spelt, "Hating Simulator!" With a 32-bit character walking up to the S and leaning against it with what seemed to be a grin. The character was a man or seemed to be a man, with blonde hair and pixels that seemed to be blue eyes. He was kind of lanky, but you didn't care to look any more than you should've.

He'd probably show up later in the game, right?

As you pressed start, the character fist pumped into the air and the title screen faded into black, soon drawing you to a screen that asked for your name. You cautiously put it in, a droopy, tired smile curling up onto your lips. "Hopefully that'll be fun," you whispered to yourself, fingers itching to press the continue button as the screen began to load. How cool, you thought, the little blonde dude is racing to catch up with the progress bar.  You giggled at the thought, slightly amazed at how much detail was put in this game already. Was it like this for every loading screen, or was this one special? Oh, well, you'd find out later.

He held a sour expression on his face, and he was gripping the strap to his book-bag tightly. His dirty blonde hair was frayed and messy, which you guessed was unique to only this sprite. "What happened to best friends stick together, huh?" His sprite changed to a more angry one, cheeks flushed red. "I was nearly mauled back there, I have you know! Women these days, I swear!" After a few moments of watching the soft music loop with the foreboding sound of drums, it continued with the blonde teenager staring directly at you with a deep frown. With a click, the screen was covered by a darkish hue, two text boxes appearing in front of the man.

Two options were given to you:

"Geez, Senpai! You nearly gave me a heart attack. And your hair is all messed up, too."

"Call it payback for leaving me alone at the bus stop in primary school. I'll never forget that."

Just for the shits and giggles, you clicked the second response, only for his expression to falter, 'Senpai' now looking somewhat hurt, or even perturbed. "You still haven't forgotten?" There was a sudden pause between his words, the screen glitching and fraying all over the place as white noise scattered about. Only a few seconds passed before it all went back to normal. "I said I was sorry! I even bought you that game you had been ogling for weeks!" He stared back at you with weirdly large puppy dog eyes, which only made your character groan in response and push past him with a chuckle.

Speaking of Senpai, he was a fair-skinned teenager with messy blonde hair that was swooped upward to hang over his forehead. He wore a blue button-up shirt with a pink tie that was lazily wrapped around the collar of his button-up. Alongside this, he held a brown book-bag, or backpack, which hung over his shoulder, his right hand grasping the strap. He had bright baby blue eyes that had sparkles here and there, and his cheeks were dusted a light shade of pink.

In other words, he looked like a complete tool. Either that or nothing more than an asshole.

"(Y/N)," He said as the background faded to that of a school's front yard. "Let me walk you to your classes. Just this once~ Or twice, or, you know... All the time." His sprite changed to a somewhat shy one, hands grasped together as if he were to pray with his gaze being averted from the screen. Instead of two options, the game gave you three, which all made you snort a bit at what they said. Whoever had created this game was surely a comedic genius, or, maybe, you just had a terrible sense of humour. Probably the latter.

"You're just saying that because you don't want the fangirls to get you."

"Come on, dude, you do this every week!"

"Okay, fine... Just no pretending we're dating this time."

You picked the first option, just to spite the Blondie, which, in response, a soft crash was heard from within the game, his face suddenly looking dejected and sad as the song slowed down. This was replaced with white noise and glitches fading through the screen, and then the song started up again, back to its usual upbeat tune, Senpai's face now as joyful and happy as ever. He was clapping his hands together with flushed cheeks.

"I knew you'd say yes!" Your character commented on his strangely optimistic behaviour which hinted at him not being like this often. "You just can't refuse an offer from your best friend, huh~?" He didn't give your character, much less the game, enough time to process what was happening before the screen faded to a bright hallway. Now that you think about it, the entire game was bright. Very, very bright. Pastel colours and softening hues, it would have been nice on the eyes, if it weren't for them being everywhere that you looked. Now, it was just blinding you.

So, with your eyelids twitching, you looked around the screen for the save button, but you couldn't find it. You guessed that it was because you were in the middle of an important part of the game, so you shrugged it off and continued through the game. Nothing was eventful, but you did learn that 'Senpai' was your characters childhood friend, being best friends. He was popular and had the majority of the girls in the school ogling after him, but he seemed to pay them no mind when he would carelessly flirt back. He could be crude and selfish, especially to other characters, but overall, he seemed to genuinely care for your character's well-being. Keyword being seemed.

Even though that probably wouldn't mean shit, given by the fact that he would constantly flirt with every character that you two run into, your character commenting, "he was forcing himself to be nice and give them what they want, but I knew I would get an earful from him later." Which you found somewhat funny or even ironic. As well as, "Senpai stared at me with a happy grin, but he was misgiving. There was something behind the facade he put up for others. His impetuous behaviour led to careless mistakes, ones of which he always scolded himself for later. Nobody knew that vulnerable side of him. At least, nobody except for me, anyway."

Implied fourth wall breaks are amazing.

So... what did 'Hating Simulator' mean for this game? Would it come into play later? You guessed that it had something to do with the way he reacted to how you responded to his demands, so, maybe, you were supposed to make him hate you? You saved the game with a curious expression, watching as the loading screen came back up with Senpai dragging the progress bar instead of chasing it. It was almost as if he was trying to close the screen, which you couldn't deny, was absolutely adorable in this context.

Actually, how dare the developers make such a bratty character adorable.
