(this goes out to you, one of my friends, who said that senpai from this fanfiction reminded you of meant to be yours from heathers. you know who you are. godspeed.)Even after you got back into the game, you had stopped playing for about a week, just out of pure spite and pettiness from it crashing on you during such an important part of the game. Today was the day that you felt yourself being drawn to said game, an aching feeling forcing you to drag yourself to your computer and set everything back up once again just as you did when you first got the dastardly thing. A smile rose to your face when the title screen, you... had actually missed seeing Senpai's delighted expression when the game would startup.
Sadly, you had forgotten most if not all of the choices that you had made in the game, which left you contemplating on which answers to choose when a multiple-choice question would occur. You didn't want to get a bad ending again, the bad ending being the game crashing and all your saved data being lost. Whatever that was, you were still going to hold a personal vendetta because God was it annoying. Nevertheless, you continued.
"I have a secret I want to tell you, (Y/N)," Senpai suddenly spoke up, his character sprite holding an extremely flustered expression on his face. "Not exactly a secret, but, it's the dirty truth that I kept to myself." Oh, goody, he was going to confess, wasn't he? "Remember your favourite pair of pyjamas? The ones you let me wear the last time I spent the night?"
Nevermind.
Senpai's face began to turn an even deeper shade of red. "I may not have stolen them on accident. I was planning on giving them back, but you never asked about them so... I assumed you just forgot about them. I've already washed them and I'll give them back, I promise!" Right after he finished his confession of that oh-so-terrible secret, three options popped up on the screen for you to choose from.
"You stole... my pyjamas."
"You know those were my favourite pair! Each day I regret not leaving you on the side of the road..."
"You know what? You can keep them. It probably has your stench all over it."
You chose the last one, just because it resonated with you more, and Senpai's facial expression immediately lit up with childlike wonder, his sprite changing to one where he grasped his cheeks with a grin while "Sugoi!" was written right next to his face. You had to contain yourself from cringing. Yep, this would definitely be a game that a weeb would drool over. You could almost see all the Tumblr posts about this guy, studying his character a bit too deeply even though he's a fictional character.
Pushing those thoughts aside, you ignored the totally-not-attempt at being funny and continued as you probably should have in the beginning, though, you found yourself more invested in the plot than you did before, probably due to the fact that you were paying more attention now just in case the game decided to crash again and take all your save data with it. No, you were not going to let that go, not until you at least finish the game. And who's to say that you'd stop being petty even then?
Eventually, you finally got back to the part of the game that you had gotten to previously, and, hey, you chose the nicest options you could - who would've guessed, because, the game didn't even glitch after that! Maybe it just wanted you to be nice to Senpai, poor guy. Well, whatever it was, it worked for you. A sneaking suspicion that plagued your mind was that the game was merely just at its limit, given its age and such, and just refused to read the coding and accept the program.
That didn't mean you weren't still disappointed, of course, you were extremely disappointed with what happened and if you hadn't known any better, you probably would've thrown something at your computer screen and just rage quit the game entirely.
Which, now, landed you here. At the end of the week just like before when that character who you couldn't even remember the name of, confessed his love to you. The day had just ended, taking you to the screen where a character should have popped up. There was no sprite for any character, at least, not for a few seconds, that is, until Senpai's character faded into view, looking like nothing more than a couple of pixels before his sprite showed up afterwards, albeit, a bit further away than before. You could actually see his upper thighs this time.
You had romanced the same character as before, so it was somewhat confusing for Senpai to be on screen rather than him, but you weren't exactly complaining. You must have chosen the wrong answers and got Senpai instead of the other dude, so, at least you would see what Senpai's confession would be. If he was even going to confess, that is. Maybe you would get some insight on why he acted the way he did toward your character, or why he was so... strange.
How he would suddenly change his personality when a new character would enter the scene and talk to you, immediately becoming more aggravated with each moment that would pass. You would notice that his sprite would get increasingly more angry with each word that the other character would speak, until, eventually, he would either lash out or leave the area with no warning. It was strange to see, but you loved the reaction that you got when your character would ask him what was wrong.
"Are you seriously that fucking stupid, (Y/N)? I don't like them. In fact, I don't like ANYONE you talk to! They're all trying to change you, trying to take away my best friend!" Senpai was lashing out angrily, clenching his fists while his ears began to turn an angry red, teeth gritting together as his nostrils flared. "Everybody fucking knows it except for you, (Y/N)! And I am getting sick and tired of watching it happen. What happened to how I felt about the situation, huh?" He chided with a scoff, and it was almost as if he was trying to contain the rest of his anger and hatred. But, instead of the black-haired teenager, you just had Senpai standing in front of your character, farther away from his usual sprite. "I know you expected to see him," the text showed up, much to your surprise. "But I wanted to get here before he got the chance to. You've been spending so much more time with him and I just feel..." His sprite changed. "I feel lonely. It feels like I'm losing my best friend and I can't even do anything about it." The gloomy tune that played in the background made the situation seem much sadder than it should have been.
You actually felt yourself feeling a bit bad for him, his dialogue tugging at your heartstrings because of how genuine he was being. He was usually driven by his ego and his greed, only showing his emotions through a temper tantrum or his anger. Your character did mention that he would tend to let his guard down around them and act as a genuine person; letting his emotions free. With the type of character he was, it was strange to see him like this.
Senpai held a sad smile on his face, one that you wouldn't expect from such an egotistically driven character like him. His expression changed once again as cherry blossoms fell around him and your character, his face changing to a love-struck one, his text box popping up regardless of what you did. It said the following phrase that you honestly expected from a game like this:
"(Y/N), I've loved you for years. Ever since we met, I've just been... infatuated with you. Everything you do is amazing, I hate to watch you hopelessly try to get with other people when I'm right here by your side!" He looked much sadder than last time, his eyes seemingly welling up with tears, fists clenched while one grasped at the strap to his book bag. "They don't love you as I do, they don't know you as I do. I'm your childhood friend, you can't just choose them over me. Please, sweetheart," He smiled at your character, the tears dotting up his eyes.
"Will you go out with me?"
