Insomnia

It's that feeling when

the house is still and silent

your clock is flashing 3 am

the moon has risen and its light blankets the room

and you're awake.

You blink in the dark,

seeing faces where there are none,

getting up for the tenth time to write something down.

You count sheep, stopping when you pass a thousand.

You eye the bathroom --

no.

It hurts, you want to sleep,

you're just so tired,

but something forces your eyes open,

sets your heart racing,

leaves you clutching a pillow and wondering what happened.

But you don't know what that was

because it was all in your head.
