newhereok -

I puffed out another ball of smoke, covering the sight around me with grey clouds. My thoughts drifted back to the time of pain and worry I had during Christmas two years ago. The time I had left my youngest son, Kevin, all alone at home. Then to the more recent time, when he had taken a plane to New York instead of our original destination. The thoughts of me being a terrible mother to him drifted through my mind, causing my heart to skip a beat. I breathed in deeply, taking in a large amount of smoke, and blowing it out after, filling my face with the addictive cloud.

My train of thoughts was cut short when an innocent small voice called, "Mom?" I raised my head, a small smile appeared on my face, watching as the young boy walked toward me, taking a seat next to me in our fairly large back garden, just under the tree house. He looked up at me innocently, smiling up at me.

"Yes, kevin?" I replied.

Kevin shoved his hands in his pockets, pulling out two cans of Pepsi, then handing me one. He opened his can with me shortly following him behind. "How was school?" I asked, smiling once he had an annoyed look on his face.

"It was boring, as usual," he said in a sad but energetic tone, "what about you? How's home?" He was now using a mocking voice, bursting into laughter when my smile fell to an annoyed frown. His laughter soon stopped once my reply came forward.

"Boring as well." I replied. He took one big gulp of Pepsi, letting out an obnoxiously loud burp after. We both began to fill with laughter. "You want to see what I can do?" I asked, earning a nod in reply. I took a large drink, drinking almost half the can. I let it set off, burping as many letters I could. "A......B......C.......D....E....." He started laughing uncontrollably, causing me to do the same.

After a short while of laughter, my husband called, yelling that the pizza is here. We both smiled at each other. I pulled myself up, with the help of the tree we were sat against, then pulling Kevin up. He pulled me into a large hug, putting a large smile across my face. Once I let go, he was already running away. He sprinted toward the door, throwing the door open and racing inside. I laughed to myself, all the while walking slowly toward the door. I could hear the laughter from the family indoors from here.
