Hotch had been autopilot for the past 2 weeks.
Nothing had quite set in for the grieving man.
But who could blame him? He'd lost the mother of both his children, and one of the children to a serial killer. And it was his fault. He wasn't there quick enough. The guilt was all consuming and it felt like he was being suffocated, and he couldn't take it anymore, he needed it all to stop so he could take a minute to process what had actually happened. It hurt more than anything, to know he'd never see his oldest child, his little girl grow up anymore than she already had hurt more than anything he'd ever been through. His son would never really even remember his mom or his older sister, who had begged for a younger sibling since one of her best friends had became a big sister, and at the age of 10, she got her baby brother, Jack, who insisted on being her best friend. After everything, Jack constantly asked for his big sister, wondering when she'd be home, awhile breaking his fathers heart, who knows that she never would be home.
And it killed him.

"H-Hi dad," Your voice was shaky as you rubbed your eyes of tears, them immediately going back to the murderer sitting on the couch, in the living room of your childhood home, playing with your little brother as if he wasn't planning on murdering both your parents, and possibly the both of you. Your mom stood behind you, her hand shaking as she held yours."Hi honey," You knew your dad was scared, and that was when you knew that things weren't looking good. Your dad never got scared, no matter what. He was always the one to tell you to not be scared, that everything would be okay and nothing bad would happen to you as long as he was around. But right now Hotch couldn't bring himself to tell you that, he didn't want to lie to you and get your hopes up.
"Are you coming to help us?" You sounded so scared, so desperate, it broke both your mom and your dads hearts. Haley pulled you closer to her, trying her hardest to comfort you even though she had no clue how to in a situation like this. You were always a mama's girl, always favouring your mother, but it didn't mean you didn't love your dad. After all, he was your dad, he was the one you'd wait up for all night and demand to stay with you until you fell asleep, he made sure you were healthy and safe, he was your dad.
So he lied.
"Yeah honey, I'm coming to help you, don't worry," All Hotch could do was lie to you and tell you things were going to be fine. That everything would be okay after this. "Y/N, honey, I want you hug your mom for me, okay?" You sniffled as you nodded, even though your dad couldn't see you. You turned around to face your mom, who wiped the tears away from your face. Haley held you as tightly as she could, not wanting to let you go in the fear she would never even get to hold you again. You choked on a sob as your mom hugged you tighter, one hand at the back of your head holding you as closely as she could. Haley let out a sigh as she let go of you, kissing the top of your head.
"Dad," Your voice was barely there. You heard your dad sniffle as he prepared himself to be ready to tell you another lie. Hotch pulled himself together, he didn't want your last memory of him to be him upset.
"Yeah honey?"
"I love you," You choked out, watching as Foyet finally grew tired of your drawn out conversation with your father. He snatched the phone from your hands and forced it into your moms. "No! Stop it!" You cried, Foyet grabbing you harshly and pulling you away from your mom. You cried for her, wanted her to hold you again so you felt safe. "Mom!" Haley wanted to tell you it was okay, that you were going to be fine.
