To your young brain, the past six months had just been one big blur. You weren't quite able to grasp the severity of what was going on, or why your dad was so constantly stressed about your location at all times. But there was one thing Joel made sure that you understood at any given time - Don't go outside on your own - and you did understand that. You didn't understand why you couldn't go outside alone, but you knew that you just couldn't. Joel was just protecting you from the harsh world you were now losing the rest of your life to, you would be stuck here for the entirety of the catastrophic collapse of the world as you briefly knew it. You had spent the days following the outbreak being carried by either your dad or uncle Tommy, hungry and cold, since you were still in the pyjamas your older sister had picked out for you the night everything had gone wrong. Your 5th birthday had fallen 3 days after the initial outbreak, Joel didn't have the heart to tell you about it, since you wouldn't have had anything to show for it except the broken ankle you had gotten the night of the outbreak, he wasn't sure if you had much a concept of your own birthday yet, so he had convinced himself it wouldn't be much of a loss to you if you didn't understand what was going on.

You sat on the floor in the kitchen in the farmhouse you were calling a house as of late. Joel had found some pens and paper for you to play around with, him and Tommy were in the process of trying to source you some real toys. Your dad and uncle sat at the dining table, a map out in front of them as they discussed their plans for the next supply run. You pushed yourself up off of the floor and tried to walk by the table, but Joel gently grabbed your arm, pulling you back.

"Where are you goin, baby?" He asked you. You pointed to the stairs and then looked back to him.

"I wanna have a nap," You told him, trying to wriggle away from him. Joel sighed before letting you, deciding that he was in fact satisfied with your answer.

"I'll wake you up later, okay?" You nodded and skipped off away from your dad and uncle. You didn't actually plan on going to bed, but instead planned on sneaking outside - it had been so long since you'd seen and been in the outside. You gently opened the door, wincing as it squeaked as it opened - you knew how angry your dad would be if he found out, knowing how much he stressed that you don't go out on your own. However, with a quick glance back, you saw that he was still occupied with what he and Tommy were talking about. Acting quickly, you ran outside, finding the warm sun beating down on you. You took a couple minutes to wander off outside of the fences surrounding the farmhouse.

"Okay, I should probably go check on Y/N," Joel said, standing up from his seat at the table, Tommy nodding in understanding as he continued studying the map laid out across the table. Joel made his way up the groaning staircase and down the hall to the room that the two of you had been sharing, only to find the bed empty, not even a trace that you had been in the bed. As he went to call out your name, he heard you scream.
