hate 2 break the fluffy mood here </3 but what if instead of sarah being the one who gets shot during the night of the outbreak, its baby girl and so basically ellie meets both joel AND sarah and they just cant help but think abt how ellie and reader probably would've been bffs despite reader being older than her:(

A/N - And...here we are, back to regularly scheduled angst fics, I actually had an idea for something similar to this but I wasn't sure where I would have led it, thank you for requesting, anon!

Joel came to a halt as he noticed the soldier in front of him, flashlight and gun pointed at the two of you. He subconsciously held you tighter, hearing you whimper in slight fear.

"Don't move!" The soldier barked at Joel, who nodded in understanding.

"My daughter, she's hurt," Joel moved towards the soldier, who then once again pointed his gun at you, causing you to cry out in fear. "Please, we're not sick." He told the soldier, watching as he spoke into the radio clipped to his chest.

"I got two civilians by the river. One of 'em injured. Ankle," The soldier spoke. You moved your face from it's position nestled in your dads neck and looked up with him, tears in your eyes.

"What about uncle Tommy and Sarah?" You asked your dad, both fear and tears in your eyes at the thought of losing either of them. Joel shushed your worries, running his hand up and down your back to try and comfort you - He thought of how unfair this was on you, you were just a 3-year-old child, you didn't deserve to live through this.

"It's okay baby, we're gonna get you help and then we'll go back for them, I promise." Joel assured you, smiling at you to try and reassure you that this was all okay - as terrified as he was, he was your dad, he had to try and comfort you first. Joel looked over at the soldier, his heartbeat increasing as he pointed the gun once more, but this time directly at you and your dad. "We're not sick. Sir... We are not sick—!"

He fired his gun.

You screamed as Joel let go of you, he groaned as the bullet grazed his side, laying on his back and watching as the soldier made his way over to him - pointing his firearm at his head. Joel put his hands up in surrender, but noted the apologetic look on the soldiers face.

"I'm sorry."

"Please, don't," Joel begged for his mercy, he would go peacefully if it meant you would get help. Before he was able to shoot Joel, the soldier was shot in the head, quickly dropping to the ground beside him. Tommy stood with Sarah, his rifle still aimed at Soldier - just in case. Joel groaned, sitting up and looking at Sarah - thank god, she's okay, he thought to himself.

"Oh no," Tommy said, Joel looked at him and Sarah, noticing that she had began crying. It was then that Joel heard the panicked gasping and crying coming from a few feet beside him.

No.

No.

"No. Oh, no..." Joel made his way over to you, you were laying on your back, shaking and trying to hold the gunshot wound on your stomach. Upon seeing your fathers face, you held your arms up for him.  "No, no, no! Sh-sh-sh-sh, okay, you're okay. Y-You're okay, move your hand, baby. Move your hand." He had never seen so much blood before. Joel didn't think a child your size could have and then lose so much blood.
