He was on the bus.

Right there-- in the seat she usually sat at.

Walking over cautiously, she glanced around. He looked up from his lap and his eyebrows raised. "Tha-- that's my seat," she whispered. He frowned.

"Oh, shit-- my bad." He stood up and she got in quickly, slipping by the window. He remained, his shadow towering over her. "Can I-- sit here?"

He was pointing at the empty seat next to her. She held her backpack closely before nodding.

"Su--sure."

The boy sat down and they were quiet the whole ride back.

The funny thing was, he asked to sit next to her on the way back home too.

And then the next day.

And each day, getting on the bus and getting off, she always watched him leave and enter the old abandoned house.

---

"Do you have a lunch?" Alex looked up. She'd discovered his name was Alex.

"Me?" She nodded. "Uh-- no."

"Do you have lunch money?" He frowned.

"Why are you asking me this?" She swallowed.

"My-- my daddy always packs me extra food and I ha--hate wasting it." Lie. "Do you want a sandwich?" Alex's eyes widened a little as he nodded slowly.

"Uh-- sure." She handed him a container. She'd asked her dad to make her an extra sandwich that morning. She was a teenager-- an eighteen-year-old that surely needed more food in her system, right? "Thanks."

"There are-- carrots in there too." He looked into the box and his eyebrows raised. "My daddy's a health junkie." Alex smiled a little.

"Yeah-- thanks."

She nodded and went back to staring out the window. They were silent the rest of the way to school.

---

"Another extra sandwich?" Mia nodded as she ate her fruits. "Princess, I'm sorry but we don't have too much bread left." She frowned. "And I still have to make your mom's lunch-- I won't have enough."

"Oh."

"Will you really be that hungry?" She thought back.

"Yes-- what-- what else can I have?" Her father smiled as headed to the fridge.

"You've been eating so much recently, princess." She picked at her pineapple. "Well-- we definitely need to do some grocery shopping this week, that's for sure."

"There's nothing for me to take today?" He yawned as he pulled out an egg.

"What if I boiled this for you-- that okay?" She nodded. "Alrighty-- will that be enough for your recently raging hunger?" She grinned and shook her head.

"I might need some extra snacks too, daddy."

In reality, Mia was not happy. How was a hard-boiled egg going to be enough for him? And as far as she knew, this was the only thing he ate. All day. You had to pay to buy lunch at school and there was no way he was going to be able to cook in the abandoned house.
