"Fuck," Hayden groaned, panting as he slowed down, watching the cart get rolled away. He stopped, hands holding his crutches as his back hunched over a little.

"Hello, Hayden." The teenager turned, eyebrows raised.

"Hello, Luna," he said with a kind smile. "Miss the food cart?" She nodded.

"As per usual," she said with a longing sigh, holding the book against her chest tight. "It's a little hard to walk in socks, you see." Hayden looked down and indeed, she was only wearing socks.

"Where are your shoes?" he asked. She sighed and nodded her head forward. They walked slowly. "Won't you slip, running in the halls?"

"I believe they've all disappeared again," she whispered. "I'm not exactly sure- they've got a mind of their own, I think." Hayden nodded slowly.

"Um- right," he said. She nodded and they walked. "Um- so, are we walking all the way to the cafeteria?" he asked. She nodded.

"I often do," she said, voice soft. "That's why I always have to leave last." He nodded.

"I guess I'll be last with you today," he sighed. She laughed a little.

"Why are you late, Hayden?" He chuckled, kicking a pebble.

"I think I slept in- nurse Martzer was late today," he said. She nodded. "Did you walk all the way from your room to here without shoes?" She nodded.

"Yes, actually," she paused. "It's rather difficult- especially since it's a little cold- the f;ppr." They stopped walking as a man in a wheelchair took his time to cross. Hayden bent down.

"I can let you borrow mi-"

"Oh no, no," she said politely, hand on his shoulder. "That's a little odd, don't you think?"

"It would keep you warm 'till we get there," he said. She shook her head and he laced his Nikes again.

"I'm quite used to it, actually." He gave her a small smile. "Well, I believe my roommate actually has been hiding my shoes, Hayden." His eyebrows raised as he frowned.

"Oh," he sighed as they crossed the street. She fixed her pigtails.

"Yep." She stopped to roll out her ankles and they walked a little faster- still not very fast. "That's alright, I'm sure my dad will send me another pair soon."

"Have you told anyone?" Hayden asked. "I don't think it's fair for them to steal your shoes." She smiled and shook her head.

"It's alright," she said dismissing it. "It's like a game for her, I think, perhaps she enjoys it." Hayden nodded slowly, running a hand through his hair. "I'll let her play- wouldn't want to ruin it."

"Well, then," he murmured. She nodded and let out another sigh. "Let me know if you'd like to borrow my shoes, alright?" She nodded again.

"Thank you, Hayden, but I'm doing okay." He nodded. "Besides, your girlfriend might not like that very much, right?" His eyebrows furrowed.

"My girlfriend?" Luna nodded. "Why would she care?" Luna giggled a little.

"Isn't that a boyfriend-girlfriend thing?" she asked.
