Nandani opened her eyes, only to close them again as a streak of light fell onto her face. Her throat felt dry, and her body ached.

“Dhruv…” she whispered, her voice barely audible. Her fingers gripped the fabric of her dress tightly as tears slid down her face.

A soft voice pulled her attention. “Hello, Miss. How are you feeling now?”

It was a doctor, his kind eyes filled with concern.

Nandani’s lips trembled. “Where… where is Dhruv?” she choked out. “I need to see him. Is he okay?”

The doctor took a deep breath, stepping closer. His face softened, but his words hit like a sharp knife.

“We did everything we could,” he said gently, “But… I’m so sorry. We couldn’t save him. Dhruv passed away during surgery.”

No.

Nandani’s world crashed around her. She shook her head, refusing to believe it. Her shaking hands pulled out the IV needle from her arm.

“Let me see him!” she cried, her voice breaking. “Please… just let me see him!”

The nurses hesitated first, their faces filled with sympathy. Then, slowly, they stepped aside. Nandani stumbled out of bed, her legs weak, but her heart pulling her forward.

When she saw Dhruv, lying still on the cold hospital bed, her knees gave out. She dropped beside him, her hands trembling as she touched his cold face.

“Baby,” she sobbed, resting her head on his chest, hoping to hear his heartbeat. “You promised you’d never leave me.”

But there was nothing. No warmth. No heartbeat. Just silence.

Her cries grew softer until exhaustion took over. The doctor gently injected a sedative, and she drifted into sleep, her tears still wet on her cheeks.

"Doctor Aryaman, the officers are here to speak with the victims," a nurse softly informed him.

"Please have them wait in my cabin, Andy," the doctor replied, as he lifted unconscious Nandani in his arms and took her to the next room.

"Clara, stay here with the patient and look after her until I return," he directed one of the senior nurses, putting Nandani to bed.

As he made his way towards his office to meet the officers, his heart pounded against his chest. Upon entering, he greeted them with a firm handshake.
