( CHAPTER SIXTEEN: HARLEM SHENANIGANS )
July, 1992

❝ did she just... knock his ass out?

It seemed like Devon Emmet's life looked perfect—on the outside. He was young, he had a beautiful girlfriend and his prestigious career in the entertainment industry gave him the ability to connect with people all around the world. However, Devon knew that his life was far from perfect. Devon had a choice to make: his career, or his family.

Naturally, Devon chose the latter. It was late July, and he honestly expected to be celebrating in Los Angeles, since three of his choreographed videos were released throughout the month. First was Kris Kross' Warm It Up, then it was Michael Jackson's Jam, and lastly, Bobby Brown's Humpin Around music video, which debuted on television sets throughout the country.

Devon Emmet's work was proudly plastered everywhere he went, and yet he chose to stay in Harlem in order to take care of his little brother. Devon didn't want to say it was a burden, he would gladly give up everything he had to take care of his family. However, he had to admit, it wasn't the most pleasant situation in the world.

While Devon's mother was in rehab after much coercing—Arkell was left without a parent, which left him seething. That small, little twelve-year-old boy was driven by so much hate that he couldn't even comprehend Devon's decision to forgive their mother. In a sense, Devon agreed with him.

He tried convincing himself that his forgiveness was a good thing, that he was actually saving his family from division. However, when Devon made the conscious decision to put his dancing career on hold for a few weeks in order to straighten out his personal life, he wasn't entirely sure if he was thinking straight.

Many sleepless nights were spent mulling over his decisions, tossing and turning in his bed, consumed with anxiety. Even if he distracted himself by making love to Nikki countless times, his cut-throat, polarising thoughts made his mind burst into flames, causing for him to feel drained, weak and unhappy. He didn't want to burden his girlfriend with his misery, and frankly she didn't seem to notice, perhaps it was because Devon had an uncanny ability to hide his problems well. Either way, he didn't feel comfortable sharing such deep, dark thoughts with her, given the fact that he thought she couldn't handle it, and well, didn't care.

So, as Devon made it his routine to wake up early in the morning and visit his uncle's house every single day to take care of Arkell, he could simply feel his brother slipping further and further away from him. Devon had a thunderous desire to help him, but he could see that Arkell never wanted his help, and seeing it all play out right before his eyes made him die inside.

"It'll be okay Dev," TJ told him as the two walked along the street, the night sky cloaking the neighbourhood with sombre shadows, causing for Devon to look even more desolate. He wore a blue hoodie, making sure that it concealed the dark circles underneath his eyes. He didn't want anyone suspecting that he wasn't getting any sleep.
