The sirens were deafening, the bright flashing lights were blinding in the dark of night.
There whole dream was quickly turning into a nightmare...
1 hour prior...
"What do you think?" Colby questioned as he brought Rebecca into the newly renovated warehouse in downtown Davenport "is this the dream you had in mind when you said child care center?" He asked as he held her hand and watched her look around and the newly put together rooms
"This is amazing" she smiled "I can see all the kids from the town really enjoying it here"
Rebecca had told Colby multiple things while back in Ireland, but Annette told him just as much.. like how his future wife when she was a young child always wanted her own little reading area somewhere in the house but the house being as small as it was, she never got her own reading spot.
"Look over here.." he said leading her towards the corner of the room
"Becca's book nook" she read the lettering on the wall and she looked around at the bookshelves that now held multiple different books
"They even have the big beanbag chairs like you wanted as a kid" he said as he looked at her and her eyes began to fill with tears
"My mum.." she said and he nodded
"I asked your mom to tell me everything you ever wanted or wished for as a kid.. that way I could bring those ideas back here to this space.. so the kids in the city and our children could enjoy them" he smiled as she leaned up and placed a kiss on his lips
"That's beautiful" she smiled as she kissed him once more "and you're insane if you think I'm not gonna get down in one of those chairs and read as an adult" she shook her head
"You might be able to get down there but I don't know if this" he placed his hand on her stomach that had grown like crazy in the last 6 weeks "is going to let you get back up"
"Hey!" She said pushing him lightly "this is your fault anyway.." she ran her hand over stomach "you did it"
"I did not do that.. I put it there.. the fact that you just keep growing is not my fault.. you can blame little Lopez for that one huh buddy?" He bent down and placed a kiss on her stomach "tell mommy to stop blaming me.."
"She's moving.." she smiled down at him as he placed another kiss on the bump
"Yeah of course he is.." he nodded "us guys gotta stick together"
"When are you gonna admit that you're wrong and it's not a boy?"
"I was wondering the same thing.. when you're gonna admit you're wrong and it's not a girl?" He asked
"If somebody would have let us go to that appointment last week we would already know"
"I had to work! You're not finding out without me" he shook his head
"Sir.." Kent broke up the moment, as much as he hated to and Colby looked over at him "your dinner reservations are in 20 minutes.. we need to wrap this tour up soon" he said and Colby nodded
"This way.." Colby motioned Rebecca with his hand "is a game room" he said "next to an art studio and a movie room" he said and Rebecca smiled
Her vision for this childcare center was coming together beautifully.
"This room is my favorite" Colby smiled and he heard the sound of clicking becoming louder, he had heard it since they came into the building
"You need to call the contractor about the sound the lights are making" Rebecca said, now hearing the clicking as well "that can't be safe"
"Colby!" Kent yelled and Colby looked over at him "Do not let go of that doorknob" he said
"What is it?" Colby asked concern quickly becoming evident in his voice
"It's been wired up to this device under the front desk" Kent was staring at the device, Colby could see that from the look in his protection officer's eyes "if you let go of that doorknob this whole place is gonna blow up"
"Go" Colby looked at Rebecca and she shook her head
"I'm staying right here with you" she planted her feet firmly in front of him
"Rebecca! Go! Get out of here! We don't know if there's another bomb in here that can blow up at any second! Get out!" He was stern now
"I said no!" Rebecca yelled
"Kent!" He yelled as he looked at the elder man who was currently on the phone with the police "get her out of here!" He yelled
"I'm not leaving you!" Rebecca grabbed onto his neck tightly as Kent quickly ran to the couple "No!" Rebecca yelled as Kent wrapped his arms around the young woman gently to pull her away "No!" She continued to yell
"I love you!" Colby yelled over her "I'll be right behind you!" He said and she shook her head as he grabbed her face in the hand that wasn't attached to the doorknob and made her look at him before he placed his lips on hers "I love you" he whispered "go.." he said with a small nod and she shook her head again "Get her out now!" Colby yelled at Kent now
The sound of the love of his life screaming his name as she was pulled from the building was the last thing he heard.
The sight of the building going up in flames with the love of her life inside was the last thing she saw before it went black.
