Hopscotch in June

I walk out the decrepit door,
my fingers traced with summer dust.
The guardian shadows loom
in the ornate foreground, shrinking.
Squinting mahogany eyes under golden rays,
my skin folds around them like morning laundry.
Radiant star dons daylight overhead. Slow,
my sight adjusts to the sun.
Slow ease follows in a pouring exhale.

My breath flows
along an undertone breeze, dewy light.
Light air caresses my face
like my best friend's mother.
Soft shadows dance beneath the trees
where I once yearned to play;

Hopscotch, jump,

concrete to grass.
The week-old trim prickles my bare feet.
Amorphic footprints embed in the soil,
like ground coffee between my toes.
The wind invites a mellow dance
of green brushstrokes from under me.
The azure sky is reminiscent
of the first boy I ever loved,
the way he felt like home
when mine was aflame.

Cotton clouds bloom in the sky like daisies
Noise chirps with the birds:
distant chatter,
rubber in friction
against ashen asphalt,
cars cut through wind
like a father's hovering butter-knife
over morning newsprint.

Hopscotch, jump,

grass to roadbed.
Touch of heat,
my naked feet over plane rock.
Warmth sears my scaled heels,
tiptoe right, tiptoe left.
Cool air dusts my shy shoulders,
lifts the weight of my choking breath.

Breathe, at ease.
The tether untangles itself from behind me,
ungrasping discomfort.
The tension evaporates from my nerves,
the tension between matter,
form intertwines with molecularized air.
The taste of freshness precipitates
on my lips. Sunlit vibrancy echoes
as the shrouded screams ringing in my ears
dissipate. My eyes let up
in interlude, and I breathe in this momentary reverie.
Out, under, and alive.
