The morning dew drops glistened on the grass leaves, and the birds around gave a concert as if it were their happiest day. The concert took place in a tree in the neighborhood of a small house in Yokohama, through which the golden morning light filtered through the upper-floor window. There was a slight movement in the bed against the wall of the small room, where a young woman was sleeping. "Sleeping" wasn't the good word. Rather, she tried to sleep with all the little creatures with wings chirping, but when her attemps took too long, she finally decided to get out of bed. She narrowed her eyes slowly, rubbing them with one hand, then opened to look at the window. Her eyes, although she was born in winter, were blue, the color of a serene summer sky, and dark chestnut hair framed her head. It wasn't a typical Asian look... but I will tell you about what led to it, on another occasion.

The girl yawned and looked at the window, smiling slightly. She dropped her legs to the ground, stretched like a kitten freshly awakened from a pleasant nap, and walked smoothly to the window, to open the curtains in one move. In an instant, the first rays of the rising May sun fell on her, making it seem as if she was shining by herself. She stood on her tiptoes to move the window frame all the way up (you should know, she wasn't too tall person), and leaned out. The landscape of the neighboring houses unfolded before her. The birds continued their concert as if nothing happened, and the room was instantly filled with the fresh morning air. Young woman took a deep breath and exhaled, then turned to the small lodgers on a nearby branch.

"You're terrible, you know? I was drawing late yesterday, it's early in the morning and you keep me awake. Unless..." Here she thought seriously and added "If this is a concert of wishes especially for me, I can forgive you." As if these little creatures understood human speech... Amazing! As soon as she said the last sentence, the birds increased their music.

"You know what... I love you little rascals! ♡" She sincerely smiled at them, then went back to the inside of her room. Still yawning, she walked across the soft carpet and swung open the wardrobe door. It was going to be a nice sunny day, so she put on a cherry blossom dress made of light wool, combed her long hair in a ponytail, leaving shorter strands free by her face, and went down to the ground floor where the kitchen was located. A middle-aged woman with ebony-black hair stood turned away from the gas stove, fiercely turning the fried eggs over. At the sound of the approaching steps, she turned her head.

"Ah, it's you Emiko. You are up early today." She smiled slightly at her, then returned to her activity.

"Oh yeah... The birds decided to give me a wish concert today, so I didn't even need an alarm clock."

"I understand. Then you want to eat breakfast early?"

"No thanks. I'll make myself some tea first."

Emiko went to the wall cabinet above the sideboard and took out a small, slightly old-fashioned mug with painted violets, then a box with green leaf tea from the nearby cabinet and put a kettle with water on the gas. She put the mug on a wooden table and poured the right amount of tea into it, then covered the box and sat down at the table, waiting for the water to boil. No one else than her parents knew that she loved drinking tea in this little, marked by time, cup. It reminded her of a certain dark-haired young man who had a special meaning in her heart for many, many years.
