They come in one's and two's and leave as fast as they came,
Friends and passers-by that seek to share your flame,
I've put on a new mask today but the day keeps getting lame
And old friends keep saying hi when the feelings are not the same.

For every new sky and every new day
I keep holding on when I feel I'm astray,
Loneliness hugs tighter and pain won't go away—
And love who keeps her back away laughs at my disarray.

It's a choice to rise above and a choice to keep sinking
So I'll start with the doing and quit with all the thinking
Problems don't come to stay and we must rise and quit shrinking—
So I'll reach out for freedom and peace while their hands are out to me for linking.

They say your 'I am' matters so I'll try to switch 'em up,
If you feel me and you love me let me know so I won't let up,
Sometimes it takes a little hell to get up to the highland—
That's why I write you this little rhyme of a boy who is an island.
